Reflective Essay On Cultural Relativism

My time in high school was a very cultural experience for me. Being in a small town was different from where I came from, I used to live in a massive community. But I wasn’t exposed to as much diversity as when I moved to New Jersey. I was fascinated by the different cultures I had learned about from the friends I made. I learned about the Albanian, Egyptian, Jamaican, Asian, Irish, and Indian culture and religions. Being exposed to these cultures opened my eyes and then I realized, it’s all this all over America. The fact that you want to build a wall to stop that diversity from pooling in makes no sense to me. Cultural Relativism explains that every culture has its own valid beliefs and practices. I want to argue why cultural relativism fails and what that expose can expand your knowledge. Diversity is the very foundation of America, I don’t see why you would want to break that. That’s where cultural relativism fails to the idea of moral progress (Rachel, J 1993, pp.21-22). Which means there is a universal standard, where the original values can be replaced with the inferior one. But that goes against cultural relativism. “Moral progress is impossible. Progress means replacing old values with new better ones” (Pismenny, 2016). But according to cultural relativism, there is no “better” just what is right for each culture.
Another issue would be the fact that most cultures don’t want to intermingle with other cultures or the fact that their cultures don’t allow them to. People are always traveling and immigrating all over the world, which can lead to cultural clashes and that is what makes up America and we are great for that.
