Reflective Essay On Communication Experience

For the informative speech in my Communication Studies class, the topic I chose was UNCG’s Human Resource Management Association. In my speech I talked about the history of HRMA, the benefits that could come from being part of HRMA, and how the club could impact anyone’s future and social capital. In my opinion I felt as though I did a better job at communicating my information to the audience compared to my Any Old Bag speech where I kind of had to go with the flow. After reviewing my speech on Acclaim, I do feel as though there are things that I still need to work on to become a better presenter.
The process of putting together my speech was probably one of the hardest things about this assignment that I struggled with. With this new speech,

The supporting material I used was a Youtube video clip that kind of helped the class understand what a Human Resources manager was and how their jobs sort of work. Although I did not get to play the full video, I felt as though the 30 seconds that was shown was actually pretty helpful because it gave an insight to what a Human Resources manager looks for in potential employees. Even though the video idea was a little different, if I could use any other type of supporting materials for my speeches I would create poster boards or create my own 30 second skit video to get the audience’s attention. I would go for these ideas because a lot of people are visual learners and even for those who are not, everyone likes the chance to be able to watch something in a class therefore more visuals would help my presentation to better keep the audience’s …show more content…
One major area I could have improved on in my speech was eye contact. In the video, I noticed that I looked down at my note cards a lot and stumbled over a few of my words by trying to talk really fast. Another area I could have improved on in my speech was the information I provided to my audience. I personally feel as though I could have done more research to find out if there was any other information about HRMA and next time I need to find information for an assignment I will make sure to do more in depth research. One last area that could have used a little work was my enthusiasm towards my topic. After watching my video, and reading the peer evaluations, I agreed with my peers that I could have been a little more enthusiastic about my topic instead of spitting straight information like a record

After presenting and completing my visual informative speech, there were several strengths and weaknesses present throughout my speech. Some of my strengths, with respect to the content of the speech as I did my visual presentation, was that I did a good job with the introduction. The introduction involved introducing my topic and grabbing the attention of my audience. Also, I had great supporting materials and most importantly great organization of my main points. As for the delivery aspect of my speech, according to the video, I had a good posture and used my flash cards very well, which were very helpful in delivering my speech.…

On my demonstrative speech called “How to Play a Guitar,” I pull out different topics related with the instrument like the parts of the guitar, music theory, and the diverse skills playing it. For instance, I spend several weeks figuring out my theme. At the end I found this topic, but like was little late I spent more time in some areas than others ones. One of that well developed areas was my attention getter; was strong enough to hook the people. But, for future speeches maybe using a real guitar or pre-recording music, because it would impact my audience in a different way.…

Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

My core interest talk was about accomplishment and inspiration in my life. It was also about how I became motivated to accomplish what I wanted to do in my life and how I wanted to inspire others like me. During my talk, I really strived to connect with the audience with all the 4 C’s (connection, context, change/climax, and conclusion) in the aspect of storytelling. I also kept fairly calm in my talk and not submitting myself to nervousness. In response to my talks, one of my classroom peers quoted on the peer evaluations that “You followed the 4 C’s and the speech flowed very well and was easy to listen to.”…

Giving persuasive duo speech was a great practice for a collaborative work. Two aspects that I liked about my speech were the citation and taking my time to speak. I noticed that I incorporated my sources in my speech in which I should have in my past speeches. I appeared to be more credible to my audience. I also like how I was taking my time to speak.…

We had to pretend we were in that moment of time where the occasion is occurring and give a speech based off of that occasion. I did my special occasion speech on my friends Rachel and Thai’s wedding. I noticed during this speech after watching it, I did have some of the similar and same habits as I did in my persuasive speech. I used my hands a lot, I swayed my body throughout the speech, was very fidgety and used “um” and “like” a lot as word fillers. I noticed I did not have as good eye contact in this speech as I did in the persuasive speech because I had to do a lot of thinking to remember where what was going to say in the next part of the story I was giving.…

After noticing the speaker’s confidence during the speech, it became clear that his calmness and ability to speak clearly, his ability to refer to his notes and to use the power point at the same time and also his ability to ensure he was the source of the information he was giving made his delivery good. This informative speech could have been improved with more body movement during the transitions and a good eye contact with the…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

Nevertheless, I knew that I would achieve some form of catharsis if I took this assignment as seriously as a possibly could. From watching the persuasive speech, it is a recurring theme in my process of watching myself speak that I am much more sympathetic of myself after given said speech. What I immediately notice is that certain planned maneuvers such as the introduction weren’t always as clear as I wanted them to be. The flash cards that I help up might have been more effective if I had less content on them.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…
