Upon, arrival to the hospital, my heart started beating really fast. Seeing the area and how old the building looked made me really nervous and scared to walk in. Walking in hospital I was frighten and anxious but, after seeing my friends that made me at ease. The first day there we were given a tour of the hospital. We were not assigned any patients until the following week.

We often forget that psychiatric patients are people who had a life before entering the unit. They are people who had jobs, attended school, had a home, and people that care about them. At first, the patient didn’t want to talk but, moments later she voluntary came and said she’s ready to talk. Upon introducing my self, and stating the reason for being there, I asked where she would like to sit and talk. As soon as I asked the first question she went on talking from one subject to another for about ten minutes. Using simple communication skills like paraphrasing, summarizing, reflecting, questioning made me learned many things about her. I learned the reason why she was admitted, how she was admitted, who petitioned her, if she was married, had children, working, education, and family support. I was very comfortable communicating with
