Over the summer of 2016, I declared my major, Business Administration, and during the Fall 2016 semester, I began my journey with PCJ215: Business Communication. Amazingly the semester went by quickly, we are down to the last few weeks of class. Throughout the semester, I have continually referred to the textbook to assist with my writing, and I have found this course to be one of the most valuable courses I have taken. Communication and writing were not my strong points, and I realized this class would take an extreme amount of time and effort to complete; this proved to be true. My determination to be successful forced me to work hard and overcome barriers. Despite my apprehension, this course turned out to be incredibly useful, and …show more content…
I currently have an Apple computer, and Microsoft Publisher does not have the program available for these computers, creating a barrier of when I could work on the brochure, therefore planning time to go to the library to use the resource did become a challenge. I initially had to spend time working with the program to become comfortable utilizing the various options. Eventually, after hours of trial and error, I was able to figure it out and create my first draft. The time had come to schedule another meeting with my partners to present the first draft, they were pleased with the design and felt the product captured their services well. After receiving feedback on the first draft, I made changes to improve the format of the brochure. The revisions included creating balance, correcting grammatical errors, changing the font and making the graphics clear. The process of producing a tangible copy of the brochure for the Guidance Department is exciting. Being able to provide an organization with a final product they can use in the school, is an invaluable opportunity. This project showed the importance of collaboration and communication amongst a team. There is no substitution for what I learned from this practical experience; reading it in a textbook may provide the information, but working with others brings the learning process full

Some of the specific principles that were illustrated in the Home Depot's Extreme Communication Makeover was the streaming on formal communication and improvement of formal communication across different languages. Home Depot grew very quickly and very vastly, and there accumulated many employees and grew to need to communicate in more than English. They formed a contract with an international translation service sand improved the language barrier with employee handbooks, operational manuals, and other functional documents. This is an example of a downward communication from a higher level organization to the lowest level (ORG). I believe that Mohawk’s Specialty Digital Substrates brochure is a well designed piece. This brochure contains many qualities of a good design; such as repetition, contrast, flow, and an organized, grid-like structure. The design of this brochure fulfills the many topics we have covered in the Graphic Design 1 class. The very first thing that I noticed when I picked up the brochure was the use of negative space on the cover.…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

Coming into Mrs. Bertachi-love’s 205 Business Communication class the one thing I won’t forget is the overpowering feeling of frighten obtained on the very first day. Though I knew this was going to be all new material to me, I panicked when she stated “This in no ordinary English class; we will not be writing the usual block format essays here, this is a class in which I will prepare you for your future.” I ever knew was how to write essays, 5 page, 10page, 15 and even 20 page reports, but what I feared the most was myself. However, I took a step back, took three long breaths and thought to myself, “MY future is MY future, and only I can control it” and with that I began my long progression process. Starting off I knew absolutely nothing…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. As a result of my aptitude to convey ideas well, communication is one of my most prevalent skills. In addition, my ability to understand the situations of others makes empathy a strong suit. Conversely, I am deficient in having courage to stand up for what is right.
