Reflective Essay On Bullying

Today things changed up a little bit. My schedule has been pretty consistent this whole semester. Because of the administrative duties with my supervisor, I was borrowed to another teacher with students who needed help with reading. From 9:00-10:00 I went to a classroom that dealt with some students with special needs. One of the students reads to me from a book, while struggling to pronounce sometimes, he managed to do it pretty well. We read some small, easy books, and then after we were finished, he was sent to play. When playing was over, we went to work on word comprehension and reading. It was difficult for him to concentrate sometimes looking around for distractions, I had to remind him to stay on task. Once I finished helping him I …show more content…
Previously the supervisor has been watching him, but today it was my duty. Him and his friends were playing a game of handball. Throughout the game they were being really argumentative, debating every out. I believe a lot of the students left angrily and there was frequent debating. I had to act the role of the referee, making decisions for the students. I had a limited knowledge of the rules, and struggled sometimes to make a decision, but me just being there relaxed some of the conflict. The incident came once I left and walked to the friendship room the student that I was watching to see if he was being bullied threw his lunchbox at another student. The other student started crying, and the aids managed to watch the whole scenario and walk them to class. This happened just minutes after I stopped watching them, they were on the way to class. My supervisor who was already heading to the office herself took them with her. After that incident before the day was over I had to watch the fifth graders in the friendship room. Usually I have no issues with them, but this time there was an argument between the girls. They usually play working in an imaginary hotel but today one of the girls was mad that they were not playing it their way. One of the girls even stated, “This is the friendship room, we have to be friendly”. By the time I was about to get involved It was time for them to …show more content…
If I had not been in the hand ball area this fight would have happened earlier. There was a lot of tension between the third-graders every out was disputed, every call fueled with anger. I had to get involved multiple time for the situation to calm down. So, when the incident occurred when they were walking back to class and I no longer could supervise them, I was not surprised. Sometimes kids need to get their frustration out, unfortunately this time it involved conflict. As for the other argument it was pretty similar, there was not as much tension as in the hand ball area, but there were small disputes. Unlike the physical fight with the boys, this girl’s argument was mostly words and honestly dealt strongly with cliques. I do not know most of the detail from the argument, but there seems to be blame in one girl in particular because of her “bossy” attitude. I do regret of not getting more involved, but I have a feeling I would have made

Disagreements are never pleasant. We need to resolve them quickly before they escalate or become personally critical, which is very hard to take back once harsh words are out. We also need to try and resolve them completely to avoid it happening again. Volunteering at school with young children I see quite a few disagreements.…

Parents and children have a lot of details to keep track of during back-to-school time: School clothes, textbooks and supplies, classroom schedules, immunizations and sports physicals. Teachers have their own backto school paperwork to tackle. This week, all public schoolteachers in Indiana are receiving an important legal notice from my office that they should read and that parents and schoolchildren also should be aware of. The legal notice reminds teachers of Indiana’s Teacher Protection Act, passed by the Indiana General Assembly in 2009.…

There is a big difference between conflicts and challenging behaviors, especially in the classroom. Conflict is “an expressed disagreement between children, usually involving property, territory, and/or privilege; or a mistaken behavior by a child or children, disagreed with by a teacher” (Gartrell, 2014, p. 512). Conflict is a natural and daily occurrence. While challenging behavior is define as “conflicts that cause harm or serious disruption; the term often connotes a continuing pattern of such conflicts shown by individual children” (Gartrell, 2014, p. 511). Challenging behavior is not usually found as an everyday occurrence.…

Last Spring, I had a student who was in the final semester of his senior year and was oppositional and rude in class. He had come to us because he had failed out of his previous private school and we were his last option. Because he is very intelligent he loved to point out every mistake that I made in class. I would politely accept these corrections, but was annoyed by his negative attitude. When he refused to participated with classmates during an experiment, I asked him to stay after and speak with me.…

I think it depends on the situation. My reason is that if there was a bully and was trying to hit you you should defend yourself so you shouldn't have to be hit or something like that. But in the story he thought he was treating him. But sometimes it could start on a full riot and fight until teachers or adults come in and stop it. If people were peaceful and chill and ok with it then nothing will happen no fights they could say ''I'm sorry i didn't know there was a time limit' but instead it's like full on war.…

Everyone who had seen the argument wanted to know what was going to happen next, who was going to say something to her, and whether or not there was gong to be another fight. With just a few words, she had managed to offend 75% of our schools population, however, she seemed unfazed by the hurtful comments thrown her way. I was kind of envious of her ability to not care. All day, I had managed to not speak to her. We weren't good friends or anything, just two girls who shared some classes, so I didn't have to try hard to avoid her.…

My first serious encounter with racial indifference was in junior high school several adolescents in my neighborhood were selected for a pilot program bussing students from a less socioeconomic community to a predominately white affluent middle school. Approximately the third day of school several white students started chasing the African American students to the bus stop. This occurred for the next three days my friends and I dismissed their behavior as nothing more than a juvenile prank. However, on the third day one of my male friends stopped running and the white kids quickly surrounded him they appeared as an angry mob.…
