. I’ve always considered my performance in English adequate. Not great, but not bad either. However this teacher did not think that I was adequate, and doubted my potential. That’s why when it came time to take the Staar test she just recognized me as someone who was going to barely squeak by. The look on her face when she told me I made one of the highest grades in all of the eighth grade was something I’ll never forget. Eighth grade was not one of my best years of school, but it wasn’t the worst either. My grades ranged from high eighties to low nineties. However, my attitude was not good and I was constantly in trouble more than the average student. I was an immature eighth grader that was trying to make the girls in my class laugh. The teacher did not find my jokes funny and gave to me what I had coming. One could tell that she disliked me and did not see me as a smart student. The Staar testing was approaching and I could only imagine she was worried about my ability to pass it. …show more content…
The groups were categorized by how the teacher felt you did during the year and on the benchmark tests. I squeaked by the benchmark tests, and was placed in the group focused on merely passing the test. She gave us plenty of advice and tips for the test. Things like: underlining, marking question numbers on the passages, and using a dictionary for every word. Of course eighth grade Edred did not want to hear what the teacher had to say. That's why I was not surprised when the teacher told me, “Edred, I need you to try your hardest and pass this test.” She never even mentioned getting commended or scoring high on the test, and she had all the reasons not to do so. I myself did not even think that I could get commended on the

We had to wait two to three weeks for a small group of people to read every child in our grades paper, grade it and send it back. If you failed you get to do the whole process over again. After the two to three weeks our teacher handed us each an envelope with our results inside. Everyone in the room was an absolute wreck hoping they passed. I ripped open my envelope and looked at my results and I saw I had received a 80/100.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Eighth grade was the worst year of my life and to this day I am thankful for everything that has happened to me. I remember when I used to hang out with the wrong people and following people’s bad footsteps just because I was lonely and needed some friends. I made choices that not only changed my life , they also showed cause and effects of my actions. I remember when it all started , I was offered my first drug. My friends and I were at a park and they randomly had some drugs.…

I was called by my teacher today. I knew that he was impressed with my writing before and so had a relieving kind of feeling, but that all went away when I saw him. The facial expression of disappointment made itself clear. He started by telling how my paper was too good that it was impossible for this much improvement to happen. He tells me that I cheated or copied someone else’s paper.…

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

I was a straight A student, was taking advanced classes, participated in extracurricular activities and loved reading in my spare time. Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

At this time, I was fairly puzzled by the concept of authority, and I never really understood why someone would have power over me. In an act of defiance, I refused to complete my cursive assignments. Needless to say, this affected me far more than it did her, and I failed writing on my progress reports with a zero. I was legitimately confused by this. How could I fail?…

There are students who just can’t get a good grade a test no matter how much they know or how much of the criteria they understand. There’s a various amount of reasons students aren’t good at testing, the list could go on and on, but the important thing is that a standardized test couldn’t possibly show what a student knows. They could also say teachers can be evaluated by those tests because if they’re teaching the students correctly they will know the answers on the test, but a teacher cannot control whether a student is actually paying attention or not, and when they have to hurry through the lessons, they’re not going to have time to go to each and every student to ask them if they understand what’s being taught. School districts need to stop using standardized tests as a way to check on a student’s achievement and evaluate a teacher’s ability to…

I remember not finishing one of the essays and she allowed me to come in and finish it on a Saturday for a B or get a zero if I didn’t come in. So of course I went, for me I have a bad habit of saying “I hate writing” or “I suck at writing”.
