You will find that many students do not like to write. I believe that it is simply because, in the beginning of their writing career, they were not allowed to explore their writing capabilities, thoughts/feelings and compile their ideas on paper about the topic also known as informal writing. Teachers must teach their students how to organize their thoughts and ideas before setting limitations due to needing to meet organization, structure, and style criteria. They are very important concepts that students will need to know, but knowing at what point in time to teach these standards is critical. Due to selecting a topic of interest, many students are excited and interested in the beginning stages of writing. In order to build upon their interest within a particular topic, we must first allow them to write down everything that they think they know about the topic (also known as Quickwrites p. 161) or want to know about the topic on paper. By doing this, not only will you, the teacher, be able to see what they know and do not know about a topic, but they will see the importance of what you are about to teach
