Decent Essays
Preparation for college began when I was in middle school. I strove to attain favorable grades in all of my classes and form valuable relationships with my superiors. When I entered high school I realized I had to step up my academic abilities in order to succeed, however, this was slightly more difficult than anticipated. After freshman year had passed and I was able to get a feel for what high school was like, I joined clubs and sports for the sake of keeping myself occupied with extra curricular activities. Joining JV swim team taught me how to manage my time so that I could achieve good grades while still being able to participate in a sport. Junior year is when I tried out for my school's Varsity dance team and joined different clubs which

Goals are something that I have always thought about in my life. Whether it be graduating high school, passing a test, or going to college. Back then I had a lot of simple goals that were easy to accomplish, but now it’s time to start making those goals much bigger. I had no idea how much that I would learn, and I had no idea how much I would struggle to learn the new material. One particular class that I feel that I have learned a lot in is WHAP. When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. In addition, McAdams…

My Road to Reading and Writing As Mark Twain said, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read”. Many people today don’t take up reading or writing as a hobby. A lot of people would not even read a book for entertainment or to expand their knowledge and the most they write is a post on social media. In my opinion, most people know how to read but chose not to because they are uninterested or unwilling which causes them no to be as proficient in writing.…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

After graduating high school in 2008 my parents gave me two options, go to college or get a job. However, going to college also meant getting a job as well because I still needed some income. I decided that community college was a better fit for me because I didn 't exactly excel in high school. When I enrolled at SUNY Adirondack in the fall of 2008 I was a Liberal Arts major because I still wasn 't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Grown up in the household with no digresses, with a unique mix of Ethiopian Jewish and Ethiopian orthodox Christian, seems a weird combination but it is just a really special part of my identity. The only people I know went to college were my teachers and there were no other role models in terms of academic aspirations or career options. I grow up with no parents with very restricted traditional relatives. I did not have any typical American teenager freedom. In high school, I was required to have the highest GPA in my class…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…

English 2010 has been a learning experience for me, I've been able to learn a lot about english that I did not know or work on before.
