1. My philosophy for leadership boils down to treating others as I would want to be treated. This approach helps me inspire others and guide them towards accomplishing organizational and personal goals. This will also enable me to respond to the privilege of being a leader by building trust and honoring the Coast Guard’s core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.
2. I believe that the most important asset of the Coast Guard is the younger members rising up through the ranks. Helping others attain their personal goals can simultaneously help meet organizational goals. Gaining a qualification helps out the member as well as the unit. When a member to attends leadership school they grow professionally and also improve the organization. Encouraging others to develop personally is also critical to meeting both personal and organizational goals. Trust can be earned from having a clear philosophy of leadership. My philosophy comes from many influences over the years. Everyone I have been affiliated with as well the education I have received has formed my philosophy of leadership. Distilled down, I am most concerned with treating people fairly. I strive to strike a balance between supporting my people and holding them accountable. Values are an important part of leadership philosophy. As a child my father constantly emphasized integrity. I was well into my 20s before I really understood what integrity meant. I had to see someone make a mistake and fail to salvage their integrity before I really understood it’s importance. Admitting a mistake and maintaining one’s integrity will also maintain trust. Integrity is only one of the many values that are incorporated into my philosophy of leadership. In the Coast Guard, competence, service, respect and responsibility are all critical values for being mission
