Reflective Essay: My Personal Leadership Philosophy

My personal leadership philosophy is that I prefer to be in charge of a situation, except if there is someone more qualified than me to lead. Then, I will allow that person to lead. The reason for this is by being in charge, I am able to have a deeper understanding of the project and the people involved and I can ensure that all aspects of what is being accomplished is completed thoroughly and correctly; in other words, I prefer to lead because I can hold everyone to a higher standard, which will result in a better outcome. However, in the case that someone is more qualified than me to lead an aspect of the project, or the project as a whole, due to greater experience or knowledge, then that person can lead instead for the sake of completing the project with a higher quality. In this way, my leadership style can best be described as authoritarian, although I would prefer to be a more democratic style leader in the future. …show more content…
For instance, as a tutor in high school, I adapted myself to a variety of situations and people with varying skill levels in a plethora of subjects. Some students were very easy to tutor, as they required a quick review on material or assistance in doing their homework. Other students, on the other hand, were entirely confused on a topic, refused to communicate, or unsure of themselves. In most cases, the tutoring went well and the outcome was positive. There were also moments where help from other tutors or teachers on a topic I did not remember how to do was needed for the sake of the student. From this, I learned to communicate with others, teach others, and tell when I needed help as a leader
