My Reflection On An English Writing Course

Module 1 Reflection My freshmen year, I was required to take Core 120, an English writing course. I knew this was going to be my most class and I was unsure if I would be able to pass or not. Prior to beginning this course I was terrified of writing. My experiences with wiring in high school had not been pleasant and I had convinced myself that I would never be able to compose any type written of written work easily. Despite my doubts and fears, I was determined to do my best and improve my skills as a writer. In order to accomplish my goal I signed up for weekly tutor appointments in the Academic Enrichment Center. My tutor was able to help me develop good writing and editing habits. My tutor also advised me on how to keep research …show more content…
Some students may expect me to fix their paper for them. However, that is not my responsibility; it is the student’s. My roles is merely to act as an advisor or guide through the editing process. Another challenge may be that a student has a negative attitude towards a particular subject or professor. Clearly explaining my expectations to my students helps eliminate any misunderstandings about my role as a tutor. In addition, I can help the student see how the course marital to their major or future job. I may also explain that while I understand their frustration, they should remain respectful towards their professors and do their best to engage in class. By helping students overcome these challenges, they may develop a more positive attitude towards their course work and teacher.
Throughout the tutoring process, I hope that my students will be able to see their gifts and recognize how they can use those gifts to serve the Lord and their fellow man. I also hope that God will build in my students a love for learning about his creation and using that knowledge to share their faith. Furthermore, I hope that God will build in me a loving and patient heart that he can use to help a student overcome their fears much like he did for

Well known for her research and publications on student writing, Nancy Sommers—now Harvard’s Expository Writing Program Director—discusses the student’s revision strategies on her journal College Composition and Communication: a compilation of some of her articles. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on three articles from Nancy 's journal: Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) with Laura Saltz as cowriter, Between the Drafts (1992), and the Novice as Expert (2004). Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) juxtaposes through a case study the revision strategies of first-year college students and experienced writers. When reading The Everyday Writer, written by Andrea A. Lunsford, director of the program in writing and rhetoric at Stanford University, I realized the importance of revising and reviewing of writing. Learning the process of writing will help greatly; therefore, assignments in the future will be more advanced and proper. In fact, peer editing is a fantastic strategy for the perfect paper; sometimes when one edits their own work they might overlook a few things, having someone else edit the paper gives another perspective to the writing. Being open to another opinion and attaining other opinions can open the mind to improve the writing. Seaman High School, where I attend, offers the Writing Center, ran by students and staff is to help improve…

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

Over the course of this semester, this class has reshaped me as both a reader and a writer. It has helped me think more critically about work I read, and to analyze the reading for components of arguments, or to find bias in the piece I am reading. This class has developed my writing style, and has aided me with becoming a stronger writer. I am now able to write persuasively, while recognizing the apposing side’s point of view. Before I started this class I was terrible at writing persuasively, however, now that I have taken this class I have learned plenty of techniques that will help me with further argumentative pieces.…

For the first time I felt as though I was on my own when it came to writing. In high school I did not take any advanced English or writing classes and I had the same English teacher for three years. My teacher was very straight forward with what he wanted so it was very easy for me to excel in the class. Starting this year, I had quickly realized that I was unprepared for this class. Coming into Dr. Krummel’s class allowed me to understand that there was no one’s hand to hold anymore.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…
