Of the three prominent sociological perspectives, I have chosen to cover the functionalist perspective for this paper. According to functionalism, society is a system of interconnected parts that work together to maintain peace and equivalence. Functionalists believe society is held together by social consensus in which the members of society comply to and work to achieve, what is best for society altogether. I chose this perspective because I identify with it and find this perspective to be very interesting. This perspective became popular in the nineteen forties and nineteen fifties, Robert Merton and Emile Durkheim were big functionalist in this perspective.…

We need to change that negative stigma about the elderly population, change our mindsets as a society because at the end, we will all have to go through that stage of life. The present is a sociological assessment for Bessie Delany.…

I have grown so much both academically and globally over these 4 years and never thought there was more to learn. I was wrong because two events (me writing my research paper and the rally in the valley) have changed my perspectives and taught me more about a topic. I have grown as an academic student by writing my research paper in both English and A.P. Government.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

    • Duke University is described as an “open canvas”. The first step in creating any piece of artwork is to find inspiration. My inspiration stems from the research opportunities offered to English majors and the chance to continue my internship research on creating methods to predict Charcot foot in diabetic patients. The next step is sketching the image, which will come through having the freedom to design my own interdisciplinary curriculum that will combine my passion for both science and English. I will layer this canvas by painting a meaningful experience through advocating for gender equality with the Blue Devils United, servicing the community through the Duke Scouting Association and further pursuing my interests of science and English…
