Reflective Essay: Learning To Read As Manguel

Reading is like a desk with a hidden compartment. There are nuggets in the unsecured drawers, but the truly valuable items will be hidden, unbeknownst to all but the most careful of searchers. The same is true with a book. One is able to glean information like plot events and facts, but nothing of substance. The true meat must be sought through careful reflection and introspection. I began learning to read when I was 3. After hearing good reviews, my parents purchased the Hooked on Phonics program, and my mom worked through it with me when I wanted to. Despite the fact that I was never forced to learn, I began to want to read books without assistance. So, I began to practice more, and I learned how to read through the phonics-intensive program.. …show more content…
In my failure to take ownership and “commune” with books, I have not only deprived myself of much knowledge, but also pleasure. One book that I want to “read” as Manguel argues is the Bible. It is both the one book that I do apply to myself is and also the book that I would like to appropriate more. I believe that the Bible has the answer to every situation, it just must be sought.Countless times, a verse says to meditate on, memorize, or let the Word lead one’s life. The concept that the Bible should guide one’s life is similar to the arguments of both Oatley and Manguel. They believe in using literature to either simulate or reflect on ones decisions. Similarly, in the Bible there are countless examples of how to live, and countless examples of how not to live. Some situations that I appropriate are the instances in Proverbs when it is said “My Son”. For example in Proverbs 7, Solomon details a young man, void of understanding, being enticed by a “strange” woman. Solomon also gives the way to prevent the enticement, wisdom and understanding. Manguel would argue that the correct way to “read” is to use this situation in order to prevent the same outcome for

I have been reading ever since I could remember. I was read to when I was little as well. I do not recall learning to read, only that when my mother sat me down to start learning how to read, I already knew how. All throughout elementary school, I participated in the Accelerated Reader (also called AR) program. I loved it because you would read books, and then takes quizzes on those books.…

When we read literature, we attempt to understand another perspective. Just as one understands the words of a book, one “attends to [the] suffering” (Schweizer) of the author, starting “an endless act of comprehension”. We can use literature as a device to understand another life. Literature helps readers gain perspective and understanding. However, Harold Schweizer questions the readers’ intents when he states “suffering can become the occasion of an endless act of comprehension”.…

As a child, revelations when it comes to books we read are usually simplistic and basic. However, as we age and grow as people and as students, we learn to think deeper into the meaning of the things we read, and analyze them differently than we did as children. Rereading a children's book as a young adult has altered my opinion of said book, and has allowed me to discover part of what formed my opinions and personality as a young adult.…

In The Library of Babel by Jorge Borges as well as S. by Doug Dorst, people and books are weaved together in inseparable ways. While The Library of Babel deals with more of a big picture version of people’s relationships with books and each other, S. provides in-depth characterizations as well as powerful relationships. Despite a major difference in how characters interact with each other and the rest of the world in these two texts, each story focuses on how people are deeply affected by books in both positive and negative ways. In each text, even though books are shown to be the determining factors of interpersonal relationships, people are still the main focus in both cases.…

Summary by Farrukh Shadzad MBA 2 – Evening Program I, before reading this book saw the movie, which motivated me to read the book as well. The name of this book is “The Pursuit of HappYness” written by Chris Garden. The two desires I had when beginning this book were: 1. That it would for the most part be the same story as told in the motion picture with a couple changes that were made for realistic impact - (like no Rubik's 3D square, no night spent in the tram restroom, and no appearing for the meeting shirtless and secured in paint, and so on... 2. That I would not care for Chris Gardner.…

I see myself in Walden because I have realized, upon reflection, that my conclusions from facing the meanness of life mirror Thoreau’s conclusions in Walden. In “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For”, Thoreau explains his motives for the unorthodox move to Walden Pond. Thoreau went into the woods to “drive life into a corner”, “live deliberately” and “publish the whole and genuine meanness of it [life]” (74). With these goals in mind, Thoreau entered an environment with obstacles requiring him to get the meanness of life. For example, by removing himself from society, Thoreau experienced how humans must managed economy of “Food, Shelter, Clothing, and Fuel” to live (10).…
