My Self Reflective Report

Good Essays
I always considered my-self a “numbers” type of guy than one who excels in writing. Throughout my entire academia english classes have always been and shall be the bane of my school work. I never fully had the confidence in my english work or in any of my written assignments to begin with, however it was not for the lack of trying but more of the thought of failure. The new techniques I learned in the class has given me some insight towards my style of writing and its execution. Evaluations from my previous work has given me a perspective in where I fall as writer and in what areas I must improve in to become better. After completing the semester, I have accomplished myself as a confident writer, created a way to improve my writing, and …show more content…
What I ended up doing was completing a paper with the best of my ability and expecting it to be graded at a minimal score. Each one of my papers exceeded the minimal score and gave me confidence as a writer, a feat I did not accomplished until now. Scoring beyond the minimal expectations for myself did not only raise my confidence as a writer but the results behind my success came from the techniques I learned in the class. I believe I finally learned a formulaic structure to follow with tackling written assignments. Personally, starting any type of paper or written assignment has been a challenge for me in the past, however it has changed after what I learned during the semester. When I enrolled for English 1A class one of the main aspects I wanted to learn was to properly start a paper or any form of writing assignment at the college level. I was given the handout on “How To Write A College Essay- The Structure”, which helped me to a great extent. It provided me with a formula on how to start papers. It was base for all my written assignments in college and I saw results with by having my time completing assignments and papers decrease. Having a formula to follow made it easier for me to tackle any written assignment and it made any written assignments similar as approaching a math problem. The more I used the formula, the more it made me appreciating my style of writing. I saw it transcend to the type of writer I would become. Although …show more content…
I found having my papers evaluated as one the most important and useful aspect during the semester. The evaluations pointed out what I needed improving on. Many of the problems with my writing was “bad wording” and I found it to be true. In my Descriptive Essay, when I first went to the writing center I found myself correcting many grammatical wordings and phrases. Learning from my previous essay I then took the time to improve the way I arrange my wording and how I write out my sentences in the next paper. When I took my second paper, the Narrative Essay, to the writing center the evaluator found nearly no grammatical issues whatsoever. Although I still received a note saying “you have wording issues” when I turned in my paper and it is evident I still face the problem but I have

I believe that this class was able to help improve my writing skills in many ways. Producing mid-drafts seemed like a nuisance at first, but has really helped improve my writing. By producing mid-drafts I was always tempted to re-read my essays before handing them in, which is something that I had never did before. Also having peer feedback also helped my writing. With the peer feedback I was able to take what was wrong with my paper and fix it before turning it in for a final grade which I found as excellent.…

Even though English 101 is a beginner writing class, it taught me how to apply those writing skills outside of the classroom walls, while helping me more than any of my other high school English classes. English 101 became better than predicted once the fear of procrastination disappeared, the writing became an expression. I feel now that I can write without being judged, and I can make the mistakes I need in order to excel. Likewise, the feeling of being confident in writing is the uttermost important lesson that this class has provided me with. Writing is not something that should be feared, but something that should be…

This helped me know where I needed to make changes and parts I did well on. Also, other feedback that was helpful was the writing center. I took all of the essays I have done in this class there. But, one in specific that I took there was the Surprising-Reversal Essay. The tutor and I discussed how I can make a better claim in my essay, and ways that I can better my thesis.…

Next, while writing through out this course I’ve learned I have made improvements as well as identified some weaknesses. Through high school, and continuing in college I have been able to follow certain formats to fit a writing proposal helping me create a well-structured paper. On the downside I’ve noticed that my outlining skills have held me back. Without creating a nice outline it is hard to write any paper. By reflecting on my work this semester it has helped me identify what I can work on to help me become a better writer.…

The papers were about the text or cartoon and what it meant as a whole. When it come to rhetorical situations it depends on what type of essay you are writing. My first paper taught me the most because it was the first real paper I had did own my own without my teacher being over my shoulder. It taught me what methods are good and bad for me to use for the rest of the semester. It taught me to work on the paper longer, what my writing process is, peer review is valuable and being able to write freely helps and the grade I got on this…

This is the last essay of my English 101 class. I enjoyed each and every minute of it. Through the books, professor Turner ‘s direct approach of teaching that consists of handing out several good and terrible examples of essays, sentences structure, and grammar in class, I not only improved my writing process such as selecting my topic, well organizing and supporting my ideas, but also corrected some of my punctuation and grammar problems. English is a second language to me, so I spent a considerable amount of time writing each essay as they had different challenges. Throughout my writing, I encountered weaknesses like punctuation and grammar that I will still improve in English 102.…

Little did I know that was not the case. After receiving my grade and feedback I realized my sentences were choppy and not well put together. When I submitted my paper the second time not only did I receive a better grade but also a better understanding of what my papers should look like and what the content should include. I really enjoyed writing this paper, because it allowed me to write about something I have a passion for. I really enjoy writing narratives, but I believe the easiest and best paper I wrote in this class would be essay two.…

When you are taking an English class center around writing, you naturally become comfortable and begin to improve on your writing in your essays you write and the more you write them the more things you realize you need to work on. For instance, one of the biggest struggles I’ve when writing at the beginning was my grammar. I found myself always making the same mistake, but the more I wrote and the more time I spent reading I found myself improving. Another thing I improved on, was my ability to cite a paper and put in essay citations. As the semester went on, Hogan gave us resources to help and teach us more in depth on how to cite and though that I was able to…

I finally was being taught not for a grade, but to fully understand and correct my mistakes. Feedback from my essays, looking over my classmates’ papers, and breaking down each part of the essay, helped me tremendously. The journal entries helped me critically evaluate an article and express my opinion on paper. I found that when I critique something, I tend to enjoy writing about how I feel and I really excelled in…

This has helped my work flow more and added a keen sense of intelligence. I have seen much improvement in my essays but have seen the most significant change from my first entrance essay “My season”, to my major events essay “Wayward Feelings”, to my final argumentative essay “A Helpful Hand”. Coming into this semester and class I knew I was a good “writer” but I knew the grammar side of it needed improvement. In my first essay of the semester “My season” I noticed…
