My Self Reflective Report

I always considered my-self a “numbers” type of guy than one who excels in writing. Throughout my entire academia english classes have always been and shall be the bane of my school work. I never fully had the confidence in my english work or in any of my written assignments to begin with, however it was not for the lack of trying but more of the thought of failure. The new techniques I learned in the class has given me some insight towards my style of writing and its execution. Evaluations from my previous work has given me a perspective in where I fall as writer and in what areas I must improve in to become better. After completing the semester, I have accomplished myself as a confident writer, created a way to improve my writing, and …show more content…
What I ended up doing was completing a paper with the best of my ability and expecting it to be graded at a minimal score. Each one of my papers exceeded the minimal score and gave me confidence as a writer, a feat I did not accomplished until now. Scoring beyond the minimal expectations for myself did not only raise my confidence as a writer but the results behind my success came from the techniques I learned in the class. I believe I finally learned a formulaic structure to follow with tackling written assignments. Personally, starting any type of paper or written assignment has been a challenge for me in the past, however it has changed after what I learned during the semester. When I enrolled for English 1A class one of the main aspects I wanted to learn was to properly start a paper or any form of writing assignment at the college level. I was given the handout on “How To Write A College Essay- The Structure”, which helped me to a great extent. It provided me with a formula on how to start papers. It was base for all my written assignments in college and I saw results with by having my time completing assignments and papers decrease. Having a formula to follow made it easier for me to tackle any written assignment and it made any written assignments similar as approaching a math problem. The more I used the formula, the more it made me appreciating my style of writing. I saw it transcend to the type of writer I would become. Although …show more content…
I found having my papers evaluated as one the most important and useful aspect during the semester. The evaluations pointed out what I needed improving on. Many of the problems with my writing was “bad wording” and I found it to be true. In my Descriptive Essay, when I first went to the writing center I found myself correcting many grammatical wordings and phrases. Learning from my previous essay I then took the time to improve the way I arrange my wording and how I write out my sentences in the next paper. When I took my second paper, the Narrative Essay, to the writing center the evaluator found nearly no grammatical issues whatsoever. Although I still received a note saying “you have wording issues” when I turned in my paper and it is evident I still face the problem but I have

I need to keep myself grounded and not get too overconfident in my writing style and previous work based on what grade I received. I have realized that I need to continue to strive for excellence instead of drafting and essay and not making edits to it that will be beneficial to my learning. Moving forward in my future English classes I will be able to apply the four learning outcomes we learned in this course, writing process, exploration and argumentation, purpose and audience, research and conventions and mechanics to benefit my learning and project scores. I will also be able to apply the learning outcomes to my future helping me to be a more rounded person who can draft, plan, edit, analyze, incorporate evidence and portray ideas effectively to the different audiences I will…

Coming into this class, my goal was to become a better writer. I knew that where ever my career may take me, I would need to know how to write well. There were a few specific things that I had in mind when coming into this class that I wanted to improve at. First was my word choice. My word choice before this class had been extremely basic and simple. Another thing that I needed to work on was being able to convey my message on paper. I typically had very good ideas but when I go to put them down on paper they could not seem to come out the way I want them too. My biggest thing coming into this class was trying to work on my…

I have learned how to insert my own creativity into my writing and fully express my thoughts in unique ways. I still sometimes go crazy with comma insertion, but I really believe I have eased up a little on that whole issue. One of the biggest things that has changed about my writing process is my word count. I am no longer worried about reaching a certain amount of words; I just write all my thoughts and most of the time I find myself way over the minimum. I also feel a lot more confident to proofread another’s paper. Before taking this course I almost felt as it I was doing the person an injustice by proofing their paper, because I honestly had no clue what I was looking for. Aside, from the grammatical and meaning part of writing an essay this course has given me something very special and that is a love of writing. I never in a million years thought I would utter those words, but I actually have really enjoying writing papers for this class. Looking back on this past semester, though I still have room for improvement with some grammatical issues and other writing errors, I still believe I deserve an A for my…

In my Exploratory Essay, my instructor said to “follow a quote with some commentary explaining why it is relevant”. I was able to do so by incorporating my own thoughts on the quote and how it connected to the points made in the essay. In my first essay, the Rhetorical Analysis essay, I received feedback from my instructor stating “your paper is not clearly organized”. In the last essay, the Researched Position essay, I received similar feedback on my draft stating “you will need to work on organization”. Usually, one would correct a common error, but I was unable to do so throughout my essay’s. This significantly showed in my Researched Position Essay with feedback from my instructor stating, “There were some places where you needed stronger topic sentences, which caused some paragraphs to jump around and not stay focused.” With this essay, I feel that I have improved on my topic sentences representing the content of the…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Before beginning this course, I knew that I lacked confidence within my writing. People say that you are your own worst critique, and I fully agree with that statement. My writing was not terrible in some aspects, but I knew that it needed to be improved upon. I lacked the experience needed because writing was not something that I did on a daily basis. When I first started English 1302, the little confidence that I had significantly plummeted since my writing seemed childish compared to other students. However, as I progressed through English 1302, I realized that my I was developing new skills that begun to transform the way I wrote. Peer reviews helped me most this semester because having a new set of eyes allowed me to see the mistakes that…

This semester of fall 2016, I took English 101. Before starting this class I must say I felt nervous and unsure about myself. The objection of this class is to learn how to write with a clear content, accurately and my writing skills need to show beyond college level. I had trouble in the past with my writing skills and grammar. However, I took the challenge and sign up for this class. I can honestly say I did okay. Even though my grades for my essays were really not bad, I still feel that insecurity that I could have done better or it’s just hard for me to give myself credit. Mr. Dutt, my instructor, has given us the right amount of homework. I felt it was a smooth process to achieve the assignments at my best. For example, we worked on our rough drafts in and we took the opportunity for Mr. Dutt go over it with us individually, he taught us how to express ourselves in the correct format that we are writing an essay and we read some essays that were very interested.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers. These tasks are far from being completed but I can see improvement with every assignment and…

To begin, I feel my vocabulary has expanded throughout my writing as I have attempted to use strong verbs rather than weak verbs along with trying to use vocabulary that we have learned in class. Additionally, I feel my ability to identify and explain rhetorical strategies has immensely improved while comparing my To Kill a Mockingbird Speech Analysis and Documentary Rhetorical Analysis essays. For example, in my analysis on Atticus Finch’s speech I only used appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos. These three appeals are unoriginal and I stated these strategies directly. While in my Documentary Analysis essay, “The Power of One,” I was sure to avoid being direct and to explain and specify the details about how the directors used strategies. “The Power of One” also demonstrated my improved method of writing my introduction and conclusion paragraphs. I was sure to begin my essay in an interesting way by opening with a rhetorical question. On top of that I introduced the idea of “the power of one” and continued this idea by concluding my essay with it as well. In addition, in “Shift to Reality” I feel my paragraph development was strong and thorough as I examined the depth at which William Golding brings his novel to a satisfying conclusion. On the other hand, I still feel I struggle with sentence structure and awkward wording as shown in my ALS Ice Bucket Challenge essay. Under timed conditions I was not able to reread and revise my essay, so this may be a valid explanation for some of my sentences. However, this will be the case for the AP exam, so this habit will need to disappear. For example, in my introduction paragraph I stated “However, to bring about this challenge once again would not be the most effective way to raise money for impoverished communities.” This sentence is not horribly confusing, but it could use improvement by making it less…

After my completion of AP English junior year, I felt better than ever about my writing. Although it is okay to be confident in your skills, I entered this year with a sense of satisfaction and no desire to take my writing abilities to the next level. Due to this lack of ambition, I haphazardly threw my first week essay together and genuinely thought my teacher would be in awe over my skills- as I was only a senior entering a college course. When I received my grade, I was shocked to see that I had been placed into the scoring category of “weak”, and my teacher ultimately wasn’t so pleased after all. After some reflection, I reached the conclusion that my teacher was right- I deserved that five out of twenty. I reread my essay and realized that my lack of effort was showing through in my writing. As a result, I began to put more emphasis on continuing to improve my writing skills and striving for perfection. For instance, at the beginning of English 1010-02 I…

    Reflection Of My Writing

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case. After receiving my grade and feedback I realized my sentences were choppy and not well put together. When I submitted my paper the second time not only did I receive a better grade but also a better understanding of what my papers should look like and what the content should include. I really enjoyed writing this paper, because it allowed me to write about something I have a passion for. I really enjoy writing narratives, but I believe the easiest and best paper I wrote in this class would be essay two. This is when we chose an advertisement and analyzed the details about it. This is my favorite type of writing because there is little room for error. The biggest mistake you could make is spelling or using commas incorrectly, but that is not the only reason this…

Every essay I have wrote I sent in to the writing center. They have truly helped me with breaking down my papers to make it easier for me to see what I have done wrong. For example, in my narrative essay they pointed out certain details that they felt needed to be added, like where they were staying and where was I going to go see them at. To me this was not details I thought were important, but they helped me to see that part of my story would have been confusing for my…

First, my expectations were completely wrong considering I thought English Composition I was the equivalent of a Literature class. English Composition I has taught me tons of knowledge that I can use throughout my college career. The essays I have written in English Composition I have dealt with real-life issues. Sadly, I did not perform grade wise as well as I had hoped in this class, but that doesn’t mean I need to shut down and stop here. It actually has motivated me. Sometimes you need to break yourself down before you build yourself back up. I suppose that is exactly what this class did for me. I learned about all my weaknesses. Now I know where I need to improve and grow. Although I struggle with form and grammatical errors, I love to write, speak and express my own opinions. I am interested in taking a journalism class, or a presentational speaking class. These courses might better fit my strengths and force me to continue to work on my weaknesses. While my grade could have been better in this class, learning where I want to go in terms of future English courses is priceless. No advisor could tell me what this course taught me, to be myself and work hard to overcome my weaknesses. As I reflect, I do realize that I did get everything out of this class that I hoped. I grew in many ways, and came out of the class knowing who I am as a writer and how I can improve…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes. I learned that you have to take your time and start he project early this way you can make multiple drafts and with each draft your essay continues to get better and better. This…
