The first one was my Native Language which is Somali, the second one was Kiswahili which was used as the national language in Kenya, and my third language was English. In schools in Kenya, the community was not paying more attention to the English language so much as they do to Kiswahili language because they wanted to stick with their language. Everyone who lives in Kenya knows Kiswahili whether they go to school or not. When I came to the US in January 2014, everything was totally different. People were using English everywhere they went, and it was a big issue since though I knew the language, …show more content…

For example, I listened to the news in English so I could build my vocabulary. Also I used flash cards to write vocabulary words and their meaning and carry the cards in my pocket in order to memorize them. The thesis for my argumentative essay was “To stop being powerless, Immigrants should learn English for the benefit of their safety, their standard of living, and in order to understand the rules and regulations of the country.” This is a good thesis statement because it connects the entire essay and the reader will follow the concept. That tip helped me, as well, because I learned to identify, clarify, and note the most important details of my papers. Plus, she helped improve my word choice and taught me not to use contractions (i.e., it’s instead of it is). Using contractions had been a major problem for me in other academic classes other than English, so learning not to use contractions strengthened my writing and made my final products less bland and more appropriate for college. Also, my English professor had taught me to use alternative adverbs to the word “very” because “very” is quite the overused word. In class, Hamlet also taught me how to use paperrater.com to check our rough and final drafts before submitting them, and she taught me how to use proper MLA and APA formatting for my…

The information provided by my teacher also helped out a lot when it came to writing with the proper format, and I believe that was the foundation for the perfect structure to my essay. For example, when our teacher gives us a new assignment, she provides links, insight, and references as how the work should be complete for a better grade. Although she provided this amazing information for my classmates and myself, I still managed to find problems writing a great essay, due to the fact that English is my second language. I would like to preface this essay by saying that this class has most definitely helped me with my major as well as forcing me to think critically about the information covered in this class. The first portion of this course consisted of reading the Lemire textbook and writing questions at the end of every reading. This was an excellent idea in my opinion because the author explains not only what it takes to be an English Major but also the many options available to them. This is something that greatly benefited me. I never realized all of what English had to offer and this textbook showed the different career paths available.…

Little did I know that English 1301 would make me grow to be a better critical thinker, improve my expressive writing skills and teach me skills to organize my texts in MLA format. Our introductory essay was a diagnostic essay about ourselves. After Mrs. Keller gave us some basic instructions we began brainstorming. At first I thought this should be easy, but I quickly realized that knowing the material does not automatically mean, putting it on paper is easy. Therefore Mrs. Keller provided us with worksheets that helped us organize our notes before we began writing.…

What did I have that they didn’t? I had practice writing and received more control of how to collect my ideas and organize them into a paper that allowed me to acquire worthy grades. To emphasize, I am able to collect my ideas faster due to the consistency of writing every week. This behavior has led to me to being able to manage my time more efficiently on ideas such as punctuation and even creating longer sentences that will improve my papers. Even though English 101 is a beginner writing class, it taught me how to apply those writing skills outside of the classroom walls, while helping me more than any of my other high school English classes.…
