I was born in Somalia, but I was raised in a small village called Mander in Kenya. When I grew up and started going to school, I learned three languages. The first one was my Native Language which is Somali, the second one was Kiswahili which was used as the national language in Kenya, and my third language was English. In schools in Kenya, the community was not paying more attention to the English language so much as they do to Kiswahili language because they wanted to stick with their language. Everyone who lives in Kenya knows Kiswahili whether they go to school or not. When I came to the US in January 2014, everything was totally different. People were using English everywhere they went, and it was a big issue since though I knew the language, …show more content…
I chose this two essay not because I got higher grades but because they are the ones that I improved as I wrote first, second, and third drafts. For this essays, one of my most challenging parts was vocabulary. When I was writing about small thing, I used many words to explain because I didn’t have a short way to explain the word. Right now I am improving my vocabulary since my instructor advised me to do everything in English and put aside the language I used to use. For example, I listened to the news in English so I could build my vocabulary. Also I used flash cards to write vocabulary words and their meaning and carry the cards in my pocket in order to memorize them. There is nothing hard in this earth it just needs your time, patience and hard work and vocabulary is one of these …show more content…
The thesis for my argumentative essay was “To stop being powerless, Immigrants should learn English for the benefit of their safety, their standard of living, and in order to understand the rules and regulations of the country.” This is a good thesis statement because it connects the entire essay and the reader will follow the concept. I started reading the comments of my papers which was written by fellow classmates and the instructor and I improved. Today I know how to connect my ideas together by using transition words such as on the other hand, as a result, furthermore etc. Writing 51 helps me to get in my major while I built my skills of writing which I need in the

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

In English 100, peer reviewing rough draft essays has been a helpful process that has helped me improve in my writing. I used peer reviewing as a tool to make the necessary corrections that were needed in one of my essays. The comments and grammar suggestions from my peers have been useful to make modifications in my writing. For example, when I received a graded paper back, I read over the peer review comments and used what was needed to make the Essay stronger. If a comment stated to include more information in the conclusion, then I went over my conclusion and added more sentences with supporting details.…
