Reflection And Character Analysis: The Ascendant By Drew Chapman

This year in English 10H has allowed me to hone and improve my reading and writing skills. With this class, I have been able to be challenged far more than I would have had I not chosen to stick with an honors class. My writing has improved leaps and bounds over the course of the year due to the large amount of papers we wrote that covered vastly different subject matters. The first paper we wrote to start off the year was a thesis essay based on an independent novel that we read over the summer. In this thesis essay, we had to choose three literary elements that were used skillfully in the book and analyze how they were used to convey the novel’s theme. I read The Ascendant by Drew Chapman, a novel about cyber warfare between the United States and China. After reading, we had to write a thesis about it in December. This essay allowed me to improve on my analysis of character. Our task was to show how the novel was really about Ishmael and his character development throughout his conflict, climax, and resolution. Since we had to create an outline for this essay, I believe that this is one of the better ones that I’ve written this year. I normally don’t use outlines, but this essay allowed me to see how much easier it is to write when you have your information neatly organized in a sequence. In this thesis, I made a few mistakes due to errors that I missed during proofreading. Naturally, my writing resolution for this essay was to make sure that I checked for every obvious error in my writing as I proofread as they could’ve been prevented. Poor proofreading has been the reason for most of my mistakes in my writing. It’s something that I haven’t really improved on too much throughout the year, but I’ve gotten better at proofreading as the year
