Reflective Essay: Improving My Writing

Improved Essays
Growing up, reading was always my least favorite subject. I hated reading everything, from menus, to cereal boxes, to road signs. As a kid, I thought practicing reading would never actually benefit me because I did not want to become an author. Now that I am older I have realized that reading is a huge part of my everyday life. As a student, my day can consist of reading a countless number of things, from essays, to assignments, to directions. Without the support from my family and teachers and the hard work I put into improving my reading skills, I would never be at the level I am at today.

Let me start by saying, I was not always a fantastic reader, I was not even an on level reader at one point. My mom started teaching me to read during the summer of ‘05, so I

Out of all of the methods, I found marching around and patting my leg the most effective. Hitting my leg at a consecutive and steady beat helped me pace my reading. Not only did marching help me pace, but it helped me concentrate. As a child, I was very antsy and restless, so while reading I could never sit still. Moving my body while reading, helped me actually understand and comprehend the words and not just disregard or overlook them. These methods helped and carried me all the way until about 3rd grade. But at this point, it was not just about reading and finishing sentences. The focus now, was actually understanding the excerpt and being able to answer questions about it. This was something I struggles with. I had mastered reading the words, but accurately understanding the written material was a bit harder. Third grade year was my hardest, I was failing all my reading test, and struggling to keep up with the other students. It had gotten to the point, where the teacher recommended I go to the support class for struggling readers. My mom was not too thrilled about this, so she made it her mission to better my

Reading is widely considered a gateway to knowledge, fantasy, and emotion. It is omnipresent in society through media, both digital and print; it is a core element in a college student’s academic workload, and provides a medium to stray from an otherwise finite world. Having been surrounded by these texts for my entire life, it begs the question, why I am utterly incapable of efficient textual evaluation? Beginning sophomore year of High School, the frequency at which I read steeply declined. Since, unless the content grabs every ounce of my attention, I cannot seem to read nearly as quickly or stay focused; stray thoughts, noises, or movements easily pull me out of whatever passage I am reading.…

In my last essay, How I Read, I stated that I would use a combination of skimming and speed reading to read Frankenstein. You added that when I read I should put the story first, but not forget any thoughts or questions that I have had. You also said that I should do a reflection of the reading after I am done reading. I have done a pretty good job at keeping my word on how I/ you wanted me to read. The article, Literary Studies and Interpreting Literary Texts, discussed how to speed read and how I wanted to read.…

At the moment, the book I am reading is The Giver. I have no idea if it is at my level, but it seems to be pretty simple to read, not many complicated words. What I do well is keeping track on what happens in the book, inferencing and predicting, making connections, getting my points, and especially asking questions and wondering. When it comes to what I struggle with, I really don’t read often when I should. Also, I tend to wander off in the middle of book, which makes me go back and reread the section I paid no attention to.…

Reading is an adventure I take part in everyday, or at least try to. I like to attempt to read for fifteen minutes everyday. To be able to read and take in what's happening, I must be in a quiet environment with no distractions. At home I read in my room with the door closed, in the basement, or in any room as long as it's quiet. On a weekly basis I read for about one and a half hours to two hours.…

Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. Reading is a subject that I have struggled in since I was a kid. I have always been in lower level English and reading classes to try to catch me up, but it has never helped. If I have the option to read or not I am going to pick to not read 10 out of 10 times. The only time I will read a book or anything of length is if I have to for a class.
