Idaho Governors Cup Scholarship Application

I am a native Idahoan, straight and foremost which means that I have had the privilege of being

raised in great place that has taught me much. From being able to kayak to knowing how to be a part

of a community that is what I learned being an Idahoan is, However, what it should also mean to be an

Idahoan is to be educated. An Idahoan should strive for more such as earning a degree or receiving an

education beyond that of getting a high school diploma. I am applying for this scholarship because I

feel that Idaho deserves better in the sense that as a part of this state, I personally should set forward to

further myself by obtaining a degree that I can take with me into the future.

A dirt road called Half Breed Drive stretches out of Auburn, Nebraska for just a few miles, through endless cornfields, past a single mailbox. But its history runs deep, with an origin story stretching back 185 years, long before Nebraska was a state, or even a territory. This road traces the top of the western boundary of the Half-Breed Tract, a failed reservation for people rooted in two cultures but welcome in neither. The story that follows only amounts to pieces that I’ve stitched together.…

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

How the Northwest Shaped Me As of this point in my life I think I’m too far down the line of mixed cultures and beliefs that I’ll never truly know what I am or ever really will be. But if there is one thing that I know has shaped me in my life in the way of values is the Northwest. There’s no other place like here, green trees, brown dirt and bark, white snow, blue oceans, ridgid mountain tops, and the mix of cultures a place like here brings.…

To be an American can mean something different to almost everyone. Most people might would say that to be an American would be to have some political aspect, or to be excessively supportive of the military. Others would say Americans are all about their rights with their guns, sloppy bacon cheeseburgers, or Gittin’ r’ Done. I, on the other hand, say something completely different; something on the opposite end of the scale. America isn’t all about football, fried foods, or the glories of the faux, over dramaticized American dream life.…

I started my educational career teaching high school children in the Bahamas, where I was born and raised. Because the island I lived on faced economic, health, and educational disparities, teaching, sometimes, was a bit of a struggle. At times, I felt like teaching was not enough to get children where they needed to be in the world of education and development. What was missing, in my opinion, was a school or educational psychologist or even a guidance counselor on staff to give children and adolescents that extra push to succeed. While us teachers were burnt out from performing our own duties as well as assuming a few responsibilities of other supporting professions, some of our students were slowly becoming unmotivated to learn.…

The question is posed, “Why are you here?” I understand clearly why this is a question this university asks every student who comes through its doors. I know they ask this because it is unclear in our society, why we need a college education. Many sources say that college degrees are useless and I have to agree with them. That one piece of paper is useless, as are most things in life, if the person who has it does not understand how to use it.…
