Reflective Essay: How Youth Sports Affect Girls In America

Decent Essays
I have never enjoyed writing because I don't think I am good writer. I never want to sit down and write what ever is on my mind. English is one of my toughest subjects because since I’m not good at it, I haven’t taken the time to learn it properly, which makes it hard. In 8th grade, we were assigned a Research Paper. We were suppose to write at least 6-8 pages. This was really hard for me because I realized that I was not good at siting things or explaining things. Our teacher told us it has to be very specific and I never thought I could have written 6 pages on such a specific topic. My paper was about how youth sports affect girls in America. I got some help and I ended up getting a good grade. Thank goodness! The whole process of writing a research paper was long and boring. I felt that we should have just got to the writing part already. After the whole paper was done and graded, I understood why we needed to learn each step. I understood why we took so long on writing the paper. It was also really stressful because our teacher kept saying that this was going to be one the only things in grade book. I am so glad I finished the paper and I don’t have to worry about a research paper for awhile. …show more content…
It takes me awhile to write because it is hard for me to take my thoughts and put them into words on a paper. Some of the essays I had to write, I enjoyed. But there was also essays I did not like at all. I don’t like to write about History. I am not good at it. I like to make things up as I go. And I can’t do that when I have to write about History. I wouldn’t say I have had a bad writing experience, but I wouldn’t say I have had an awesome experience. I hope that I will have even better writing experiences and grow in writing here at OLP. I hope I will become a better writer in my next four years. I also hope English will not be my toughest subject by senior

Ladies could not always play the same games as men. In the past, women had a lower status than men. Because the men were superior, a lady’s place was in her home cooking meals, cleaning messes, and watching the children. Women fought for a chance to play sports, including basketball. These women were finally able to play the sports, but the audience thought the games to be too rough, so the rules changed.…

In sport today I believe women are treated in an unfair way to their male counterparts. Sport is controlled by the media in this century and women are looked at as sexual objects rather than for their talent like men are. The women are also then expected to wear skimpy clothing not because it’s better for the sport but because of marketing. Professional female athletes are seen as inferior to their male counterparts and therefore don’t get as much media coverage. Women athletes play the exact same games, train equally as hard, yet are still getting paid a large amount less than men.…

Writing has not been one of my best skills in life. If I can get out of writing, I will. When writing long research papers, I did not feel inspired to write it and I will do the bare minimum. When it came to the last couple of years and we can choose our topic of desire while writing essays, I became more involved.…

I realized that even though it was hard it was going to help me with my future assignments, it helped me learn about a new type of writing, and my own writing techniques. This being said, I learned that I have to create an outline for myself whenever I’m writing anything longer than a page and reread my paper to look for errors. I learned that a science research paper is completely different then an english research paper, because of the tone that you use when you are writing to your audience. When I’m writing a English research paper it’s mostly my interpretation of a book or multiple poems and sometimes a bit of background information about an author or time period. However, for a Science research paper you need actual data and evidence you can’t go off of your own thought or interpretation.…

Writing can be a struggle for a lot of people, including me. High school showed me that I clearly struggle with specific parts of creating a paper, or a short story. Like most people in high school I was given complements on my work, and some specific parts of my paper to work on by my high school instructors. I always had a great topic, or I thought my story was great. There is a similar problem I had then, and still have now.…

Youth sports have been a very popular recreation in America. It allows kids to have the chance to play a sport at a young age. However, many of the kids only play a single sport, and the types of adults that either spectate or coach youth sports are mainly split into two opposing sides. One half helps the kids to succeed in the sport they are playing and let the kid choose if they want to play that sport, and the other half force the child to play a sport that they may not like and gravitate towards the child’s every mistake like a moth to a flame. This can cause many problems for the child and can often be overwhelming.…

In the past, there have been many counter arguments that state that women are not the victims of gender bias but are in fact the perpetrators. Arguments include last name changes, stay at home parents, and athletics. People argue that women are adhering to societal standards by changing their last names from their maiden names to their spouse’s name when they get married(Sommers, “Women are”). Generally speaking, when people think of which parent would be the one who would be deemed the stay at home parent, they think of women. Men argue that women do this to themselves as they are not willing to go out into the workforce and work but simply wish to stay at home, as the name states, and do domestic duties (Sommers, “Women are”).…

This class on Race, Gender, Class in Sports has made me think of things that I never even thought of before. I played sports, but never thought anything more than I played the sport and I enjoyed it, I never thought of how we got to this sport I play, or how I as a woman am able to play sports, or even how the game came to be. Some lessons I learned over this course are sports have come a long way, each sport has their own history, sports should rely on performance, to not take sports for granted, that race, gender and class are still the foundation of sports, and that we will always have obstacles to overcome in sports. In sports we will always be trying to strive and improve sports through race, gender and class along with trying to rely on performance to guide us in the…

Cannabis is considered one of the few anadromous drugs, and thus should have little gender disparity, this is contradicted as cannabis follows the same trend of male dominance in consumption of, leading to the research into female aversion or their attraction to cannabis use, their reasons for their action, their handling of a gendered drug culture and how characteristics of gender are executed, disputed and revised. Women are often paid much less than men because they do not generate enough attention for the public. If television stations aired more women’s sports, they would generate enough to fans to raise more money and receive high paychecks. Men sports teams are considered to be more popular and more exciting than women’s sports. If women’s sports were aired on the radio and television shows as often as men’s, they would have a chance to make more money. Also, men have excessive amounts of money given from salary to free gifts from big advertisement…

Participation in sports has become common among children and adults. Youth sports are a fun way for kids under 18 to participate in sports and have fun doing what they love. Some people argue that youth sports teach young athletes the value of teamwork and leadership. Others argue that youth sports have become too intense and competitive. I believe that youth sports have become too intense and competitive because of the increased injuries in young athletes and the attitude of parents and coaches towards the children.…

However, after completing this project, I felt very accomplished because I was able to communicate my research findings through writing. I also realized that I can take advantage of this experience to communicate effectively to other members of society. For instance, I can use these writing skills to write a proper resume and cover letter that will highlight my qualifications. I can also notify other employees, supervisors and clients of my progress in a project through a progress report. I now have a much greater appreciation towards writing and I realized how writing can potentially change the way we communicate to one another in every aspect of…
