In high school, it is not taken seriously, while in college nothing is a joke. As a high school student, I can hand in homework late, not show up to school if it isn’t an important reason, and homework isn’t difficult to do. Every student can mange their time easily because of the amount of work you get in high school. Some people can do their assignment the night before and finish on time to hand in the next day. College is nothing compare to high school. Teachers will help you pass and exam by staying after school or during the day. In college, you have to find out a way to get help besides the professor. I learned that procrastination is due to “a fear or failure” (Zarick & Stonebraker p. 212), also, students will wait to start on an assignment due at the end of the week rather than starting when the assignment is assigned. One suggested solution was to divide a project in “smaller task” (p. 214) to feel less…

Like many students, college students always want the easiest way to attain a good grade. That was what I experienced in high school. Teachers give credit for work completed rather than the accuracy of the work and students would receive credit for things that had nothing to do with materials being taught in class. For example, my teacher would give extra credit on essays for bringing tissue boxes to class. In high school, students get used to slacking off and procrastinating however teachers seemed like they did not care to help discourage these bad habits.…

I am a first generation college student. I am defined that way because my parents never went to college. Some of the differences are the reasons students choose to go to college, institution selection, and lifestyles. I enroll in less expensive college sector, but most of the students I know are often faced with a lack of resources due to the low income.…

I realized that my procrastination was getting out of control during my sophomore year in college. I worked 40 hours a week, and I was also a full time student. My grades suffered due to my procrastination, and my job was my top priority instead of my education. During my sophomore year, I would stay up all night writing papers the day before the paper was due, and I would also pull all-nighters the day before an exam. I ended the first semester of my sophomore year with a 2.6 GPA and I was…

After graduating high school in 2008 my parents gave me two options, go to college or get a job. However, going to college also meant getting a job as well because I still needed some income. I decided that community college was a better fit for me because I didn 't exactly excel in high school. When I enrolled at SUNY Adirondack in the fall of 2008 I was a Liberal Arts major because I still wasn 't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up.…

The time for homework will vary among students; however, the average of assigned homework will come around four hours per week. It may not sound that like much at first, but four hours can be a lot to some students, especially in college. In high school, college was glorified by mass media- everything seemed so much easier. Some students may not be able to study or do homework but once a week with a full time job along with other responsibilities. If students are expected to do four hours of assignments a week, it can force them to have to do it all in one or two days.…

College Success Skills #2 At the beginning of this semester, my main goal was to work on my habit of procrastination. I wanted to manage my time better with the use of a planner and make myself sit down and do my homework or study ahead of time so that I wouldn’t be as stressed out and could have time to have fun with friends without worrying about an assignment or test. At first I was doing an okay job, but soon I found myself falling back into my old habits.…

My academic experience at Union College is the culmination of my varied academic experience growing up. I began my education in a highly diverse elementary school (2001-2007), which laid a critical foundation of being globally conscious of differing cultural beliefs and practices. Next, I attended a middle/high school named Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) (2007-2012), that neither provided letter grades nor used exams as the principle ways to evaluate student’s abilities. LACS instilled a foundation of critical thinking abilities and pushed me to advocate and take initiative in my academic and professional endeavors. In 11th grade, I opted to transfer to the public, conventional school named Ithaca High School (2012-2013).…

Self-Reflective Essay College was nothing I expected and the transition from high school to college was tough. During my senior year of high school, I took easier classes unlike everyone else who took harder ones to prepare themselves for college. In my classes, I never had to study or worry about the workload, but in college it was way different. I wasn’t sure how to study for exams, so I struggled at the beginning of the semester.…

College as a whole is not at all what I expected it to be like, just because I was able to wake up early for highschool it doesn’t even equal up to waking up early for a college class. Being a freshman I didn’t know what to really expect from college except from what I seen on tv. I’m a biology major currently taking five classes, Biology 131, Biology 160, Core 101, Math 138, and University 100. I was originally in six classes, but to take some of the load off that I had I decided to withdraw for Chemistry 101. My major requires more time outside of class than originally thought.…
