Reflective Essay: How The Ace Program Changed My Life

Ever since I was a kid, I knew one thing: I wanted to be successful, I wanted to be someone important. Some days, this vision was the only escape I had from a severely broken home. I spent my early years taking care of my baby brother, something my mother couldn’t do, due to her severe bipolar- schizophrenic mental problems. My dad was to sick to do much of anything; at only seven years old I was taking care of a kid and going to school. I had to mature pretty quickly in order for my family to survive. Though I certainly had a lot on my plate, I rarely ever missed school. Even when we were homeless I still knew I needed an education to get anywhere I wanted to be in life. I was determined to go to college, even though at that point it seemed highly unlikely, I knew things would change for the better.
When me and my brother were taken away from our parents and swept into foster care, school was how I coped. It was the only thing I could count on to be there. When we were placed into the care of our Aunt who is now, legally our mother, our life finally changed for the better. Anything in the medical field is competitive, ACE will help me get the knowledge I need sooner so I can become a nurse sooner, kids really do need experienced nurses and nurses who love what they do. Kids are so optimistic, even when they’re sick and I want to make sure they stay that way. I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to apply for the ACE program and the possibility to start pursuing a college education before highschool ends. I truly believe the ACE program will help me accomplish a college education in a way that nothing else
