One way I give back is by volunteering at the Science Museum of Minnesota. As a volunteer at the Science Museum, I have the opportunity to meet and interact with people of all ages and perform various experiments with them. Additionally, I am involved in my local food shelf, where I have the chance to organize and distribute food packages to low-income families.
Another significant way I contribute to my community is by tutoring students at Deerwood Elementary once a week. As a tutor, I have the chance to work one-on-one with fifth graders who need to improve their reading, math, and social skills. I have been involved in this program for three years now, and have had the privilege to observe three students grow significantly over the course of these years. I signed up to be a tutor during my freshman year, only because a friend was doing it too. I had no idea that the experience would end up having such an impact on me, and that I’d come back every year.

He just wasn’t grasping the concepts, and I didn’t know how else to clarify them. Therefore, I constantly challenged myself to create innovative ways to explain the material, and to be inventive with my teaching approaches. We played Battleship to understand graphing, used chocolate bars to learn fractions, and worked with Legos to determine surface area. Over the course of the year, Chad memorized all of his multiplication tables, and can now compute two-digit sums in his head.
