Reflective Essay: Going To The Counseling Services

Going to the counseling services can be looked down upon at times, and it can sometimes be very frustrating for the person going through the process. Finding the right counselor, opening up to your counselor, and actually taking the advice given to you, can exhaust a person to no end. Although an often draining process, those that complete the process benefit from it greatly. As Dr. Seuss once said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” With our brain in our head and feet in our shoes, guidance counseling can sometimes help steer us in any direction we choose. Routine guidance keeps our heads in check and preserves our mental health. With a healthy mental state, we carry our heads high and the corners of our mouths turned up. A happier person makes happier decisions and life around them is in turn happier. Balance in life seems possible with the tools given to you in counseling. Things out of your control become easier to live with, and difficult life events can turn from mountains to a stretch of the flint hills.

Melissa (Missy) allows me to work out my own problems, occasionally asking me a question to steer my thoughts in the beneficial direction. Her questions allow me to process why I am feeling the way I am and what I can do about my feelings. Out of all the counselors I have dealt with, Missy has been able to make me feel the most independent. In our sessions I feel that my confusing emotions can be straightened out with Missy only saying ten words, because she knows I, and other students, am capable beings in charge of our own lives. She has been able to identify contradictory feelings and statements to find my true motive behind my words, and in turn helps guide me to figure it out for
