Reflective Essay: Game Day At Xavier University

“Game Day” isn’t a regular day at Xavier University of Louisiana; it’s a day for Xavier’s Golden Nugget’s to defend their pride, while we cast our wide angel lens towards the basketball court, capturing the engulfing reflection pool in all of its pride. Athletics are a big part to most universities and students’ life. Either they love to participate or some love to go and cheer their peers and colleagues on. I learned this while working at a Xavier’s Women basketball game. I wanted to see my fellow students in a less stressed atmosphere, rather than a classroom. My interest was also peaked because I watched basketball games in high school so I was able to relate to it very much. To begin with, understanding your teams objective and effectively communicating what area they will be capturing is pivotal to developing listening skills. In the real world, we will need to lend our ideas to our clients and know their wants or needs, understanding and hearing what they want will prevent problems in the future. Failure to listen can only guarantee that someone will miss something spectacular, like the game-winning shot; a circumstance that not even the best videographer can rescue. Next, time management is important on being a dependable asset to the team and reflects your videography work. If you learn how to manage your time, you won’t find yourself struggling to meet deadlines or leaving your position in the middle of a game. Instead, you would have the satisfaction of your team. In many ways, the skills needed to be an effective videographer are no way different than those of the freelance writer, public relation practitioner, or photographer. Talent will take you a long way, but it won’t take you to your potential unless you practice and implement each skill while in the
