Pros And Cons Of Being A Swimmer

Aristotle once said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” (BrainyQuote, 2018). As a swimmer, I find a great deal of validity in this. Those who are not involved in this sport, often tend to overlook its complexities and the adversity one must endure regularly, both internally and externally. This often starts with the preparation of a long weeks’ worth of grueling late-night practices, during which you simply have nothing more to give. All the way to the moment where you anxiously step on the block for a race where you know so much is at stake, and you must prepare to exert every ounce of effort you have over several hundred meters, while still hoping it will not be short of your long-anticipated goals. It is dusk during a calm winter night. The temperature outside is barely above freezing, and a soft, steady snow descends upon the dimly lit streets. I gaze at the silhouettes created on the roads as our car travels across the lonely town at night. The weather is certainly nothing out of the ordinary for this time of the year. Neither is being snug underneath your bed ready for a good night’s rest. Except, this is not what I have planned on this night. I am on my way to the Aquatic Center to begin another day’s laborious workout. As I enter the cold water, I am overcome by the strong stench of chlorine, and feel the same familiar chill run through my body, all I can think of is going back to the comfort of my home and bed. I know I must persevere though, as in several months, my routine will have hopefully payed off. As I have begun to regain my comfort over several hundred
