My acceptance into the human services program at Lindsey Wilson College marked the beginning of a whole new journey in my life. In the fall semester of 2013, I began my first human service classes. I brought with me a desire to help others, and a curiosity about this field, but very little knowledge. My past work experiences had put me into positions of service, but had not taught me the intercut parts of this profession or how one might master such. I have spent the last two years learning firsthand from some of the finest counselors that I know. I went into this program on a mission to learn as much as I could possibly learn. Along the way I have gleaned every little tidbit, took numerous notes, and asked endless questions, which have all led to a rich educational experience and an understanding of myself that I could not have achieved any other way.

Past experiences in my life put me in the receiving end of services. At the time, I was struggling with my own perception, and I didn’t want to consider myself a wounded helper. I felt that “wounded” was a depiction of my worth as an individual and my value as a future professional. During the last two years, I have come to see that past experiences do not disqualify me and can actually add to my professional ability. We each bring our own unique perspectives to this field that can be utilized to improve our performance. I believe there is value in understanding the different forces that draw us to this type of
