Participating in the pursuit of human expression and truth by acting in the art of theatrical storytelling throughout my childhood and high school years has molded me into a better educated and more expressive individual, in turn changing my life and person for the better. Theater alone has tested and dramatically altered my personal and political views. With that, it has brought me face to face with multiple issues I would have never encountered otherwise. The first significant challenge I encountered in my theatrical objective was the decision to undermine my father’s expectation of me pursuing a career in engineering- like him- and instead dedicating my high school years to the study and participation in theatre. In this particular production, Hermia’s love interest would be portrayed as a girl, making Hermia a lesbian. Growing up in a largely LDS community, homosexuality was rarely talked about and even more rarely accepted. Despite my family being supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, this role challenged my views on a subject that I hadn’t really mulled over previously. After being chastised and subject to some snide and offensive commentary by several of my Mormon and non-Mormon friends, my decision to fully support and become active in GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) was established. Later, I was signed onto a production of The Vagina Monologues- a show that discusses sexuality and violence against women- as a photographer.
