Reflective Essay: Effective Leadership In The Classroom

I never saw leadership as an opportunity to bark out orders or sit back while others do all the work. To be a truly effective leader, you have to be able to work alongside the people you are leading and show them what to do through example. I came to this realization while decorating our class hallway during homecoming week. Every year each class is assigned a hallway to decorate based on the homecoming theme. Usually, the Class President is in charge of planning what the hallway is going to look like and giving people specific jobs to spread out the work. When it came time to actually decorate the hall, however, I found that my fellow students were coming to me, the Class Secretary, for direction and guidance instead of the President. Being a huge advocate for preserving the environment, I was chosen to participate in a program with thirty other students called the Stream Restoration Program. With a grant from The Maryland Department of Natural Resources our group planted 2,000 trees across Anne Arundel County to help improve the quality of the Chesapeake Bay. For each tree planting a student is assigned to lead the group and make sure all trees are planted correctly. Since planting trees is exceptionally hard work, most of the students take the leadership role as a way to get out of working. This makes the process so much longer since all the other students are frustrated and tired, while the leader just sits back. Realizing this, I took a different approach when my turn to lead arrived. I paired everyone up, assigned jobs, and told them that I would be working just as hard as everyone else to help get this done. This strategy lifted the moods of all the students and we planted two hundred trees in three hours - the fastest we have ever done a tree planting. Having served in many leadership positions ranging from a Class and Venture Crew Secretary, an Enrichment Teacher for my local elementary school or as Assistant Director for a local church, it is my hope that at the end of my terms those under my leadership will not only be proud of our accomplishments, but also the relationships we

Leadership doesn’t necessarily have to be grandiose or significantly impactful. It can be displayed more casually or in a school environment like in my US History class. My table was often rowdy, which can be a problem when there was group work to complete. As a result, I constantly found myself assigning tasks to different people and managing their progress. One of the tasks of a leader is to make sure everyone does their part to achieve the end goal.…

Our band director always emphasized the “servitude” leadership. But at first, I could not imagine what a servant leader would be since I always thought that an ideal leader is cunning and charismatic. Over the course of time, however, I learned that leadership is not only defined as a charismatic commander, but also a mediator of the members who guides the group towards a common goal. As the trombone section leader in our marching band, I put in my best effort to demonstrate“leadership”, to never complain at all circumstances, and to encourage the section to keep pursue progress; yet, there was a problem. One day, one of my peers claimed that the freshmen were struggling because they found it difficult to adjust to the high school level of…

Extending Leadership Beyond the Classroom In order to extend my teacher leadership outside the classroom, I might begin my working with other special education colleagues, grade level team or working with the other reading teacher in my building. I would start by possibly presenting my research plan at a PLC meeting and asking other teachers’ thoughts or seeing if they would like to help by either collaborating with me or being a critical friend as I work through the research. From there, when I complete the research I can present findings to my administrator and then maybe at an all school faculty meeting, and I can have teachers apply the findings to their own disciplines. At some point, I will also be presenting the findings at a Bellarmine…

I would frequently text my volunteers throughout the month of November to remind them to hand out flyers and get more signatures. Setting small bench marks such as each person getting ten more signatures on a particular day consequently lead to the overall big impact on 337 people’s lives. Trust was also critical in my team accomplishing the set goals. I made it a priority to not be a leader that is constantly micromanaging and breathing down my volunteers’ neck. It is counter-productive and shows distrust.…

In my opinion, leadership is an art that influences others to attain a common goal. An effective leader should be humble and strong; someone who can give and take advices to and from others. One cannot be a leader if one cannot follow. In my community, I have had a chance to live by example by volunteering my time to helping others. Furthermore, I am actively involved in school activities, such as choir and other activities that inspire others to make a difference.…

As I progressed through the Restorative Leadership Development: Authority with Grace course over the last several weeks, a few themes emerged for me. The need to take care of myself, the need to create time and space for reflection and the need to be confident to make decisions that will have consequences are areas that I received specific feedback about. Throughout the course, I applied these ideas to both my work and my personal life with mixed results. However, despite the mixed results, I have learned significant lessons, and begun to establish a stronger sense of confidence, that I will carry forward with me as I try new approaches and work diligently to continue to improve my personal, interpersonal and leadership skills.…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens. Accomplishing this requires a leader who is knowledgeable in pedagogy and curriculum, including the use of data and current assessments to enhance instruction, and who possesses outstanding communication skills, the ability to manage an operation’s resources effectively, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and is passionate and committed to helping students learn. I believe that my interpersonal skills will be my biggest strength as an educational leader. I can still remember the day when my parents told me the phrase, “You are a leader, not a follower.” It was in kindergarden right after I told them about a few girls who were making fun of a friend of fine, and I decided to stop them and defend her. When my parents told me that phrase, it definitely stuck with me throughout my life. I think that’s a phase most kids hear time to time in their childhood. 1. Leadership development is important to me for several reasons. A leader is someone who guides a group of people to be more productive and successful in their work. An entire organization can take after the character of its leader. Prior to the start of the team dynamics class, leadership, to me, was just a way for leaders to inspire people to follow them and motivate them to achieve a certain goal. As the class went on, I realized how important leadership is and how it is critical for people to succeed and get to higher positions in the business world. In addition, I learned that the actions of the leaders can influence a person significantly, whether it is in positive or negative ways. I developed a table of my leadership principles in the beginning of class, which includes honesty, passionate, courageous, ambition, being a role model, and the ability to motivate people to reach goals. As I learned more about leadership, I realized how there are also other principles…

The Power of Leadership In every school that exhibits strength, one will see a leader that empowers the staff to achieve their goals. Strong leadership entails one who shares a vision with their staff in order to produce growth for the students. Without a leader, teachers will have to take on many other roles that distract their focus from their daily classroom routines. Furthermore, I believe that a successful school needs a principal to oversee the school culture, provide instructional leadership, and exemplify an understanding of state standards.…
