I began attending Texas State University in the fall of 2011. Enamored with the freedom and excitement of being on my own in a new town, I wholeheartedly embraced the college party lifestyle I had seen perpetuated in pop culture. Little did I realize that there is a purpose to college beyond reckless celebration, and my grades began to decline. In May of 2012, I was informed that I was on academic suspension and could not attend Texas State for the following fall semester. Needless to say, my parents were furious. Due to my selfish desire to maintain my party lifestyle, I neglected to inform my parents of my poor grades, and my imminent suspension came as a shock. May marked the third from final month of my lease and I only had three weeks, three potential pay periods, to make next month’s rent. Back in high school, I used to work at a local fast food restaurant, so I planned on leveraging that experience to secure a cooking position quickly. However, I had only gotten my previous job because I was family friends with the owner and I would need to get the job quickly. With these constraints in mind, I sought the most desperate restaurant I could find and settled on Burger King. I donned my best dress shirt and slacks and entered through doors plastered with help wanted signs. My timing was fortunate, as the gentleman behind the counter who I offered my resume to was in fact the manager. He sat me down for an immediate interview and I was offered a minimum wage position at 30 hours a week. Calculating the amount I would earn per pay check, I eagerly accepted the position and was set to train the following day. I knew it wouldn’t be much money, but it would be barely enough to keep a roof over my head.
