New York City is one of the most diverse cities in the nation. You have individuals from different walks of life. I am one of those individuals. I am a Hispanic-white young woman who grew up with developmental delays and a speech impediment. I grew up in Canarsie, a predominantly Caribbean neighborhood. I went to three schools where I was the minority, meaning that I was not around people who were from various backgrounds. While I was in high school, I was told from others about how diverse the student population is in college. As a result, I began to yearn to go to college. In my junior year, I began searching for colleges where diversity is the highest. During my search, I discovered that Brooklyn College was extremely diverse, which is what attracted me to apply there; I got accepted and decided to attend there. In my first year at Brooklyn College, I have met a lot of people who were different from myself in terms of race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual …show more content…
We were volunteers for the ITS department to market CUNYfirst for the spring 2013 semester. During this time, D was writing notes to his friends to thank them for being a good friend. It was not until L and I discovered the biases D held prior to his friendships. In D’s letter to L, he mentioned his first impressions on L and his disability, which included “what can a person in a wheelchair do>” While we were reading that letter, we were surprised at what D wrote. D was (and is) a kind person, but what he wrote was not well-worded. He is an individual who cares a lot about diversity. Because of this fact about him, L and I knew that D did not mean to hurt anyone. We saw that he had good intentions; it was not communicated as well. As a result, L decided to talk to D about what he wrote. When I asked L about their conversation, he said that it went well and that D apologized for what he stated in the

The town that I grew up in is known for being a very diverse town – the high school that I graduated from back in Clifton, New Jersey, had around 3,300 students enrolled from many different backgrounds, races, nationalities, class, and religions. Walking through the hallway of Clifton High School one would hear many different languages and see many people who look exceptionally different from one another. Because the high school had many students from different backgrounds and wanted the students to be well aware and accepting of this, the school offered various clubs and organizations such as: sports teams, French, Spanish, and Italian clubs, a cheerleading team, and even a pep band. These clubs and organizations allowed many students of different…

Interactions with diverse peers inside the classroom and outside the classroom are influencing factors of diversification of student environments. Results also showed that curriculums that were diversified aid students in exposure to diversity and diverse communication. This study demonstrated how institutions need to structure and facilitate interactions between diverse communities on college campuses around the nation (Hurtado, 2005). The results were supported by another study by…

My feelings of diversity and intersectionality didn't matter to me because it was amazing to just have friends that I could relate to and have a common interest with. It was great to hear about where they came from if they lived somewhere else before settling to Satanta. Later on, in my life, I learned some new possibilities with diversity in my overall family including race, religion, and sexual…

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. My parents had not graduated high school, therefore once college applications became relevant, they unfortunately could not help me. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". To my dismay, once classes began, I was lost.…

One of the most impactful moments of my young College experience was the result of one of my College Professors. She grew up where there was very little diversity, moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan at the young age of seven-teen, where she first experienced diversity. From her I learned, my many experiences of being open to people from different cultures and ethnicities are apart of why I am comfortable with all people from different backgrounds, and able to thrive in any environment or situation for which I am…

As a child raised in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, my initial encounter with people from other backgrounds occurred when the school district started bussing kids across the city to largely populated white schools. While this experience took us out of our neighborhood schools, it provided an opportunity to meet students from other races, ethnicities, and religions which were different from me. Interacting with kids from various backgrounds helped me to be more open to different perspectives and not to prejudge. Additionally, the church I grew up in was very strict.…

Having a large population of people of color, Los Angeles has been a site of racial tensions between Latinos and Blacks. In the mid-2000’s, there was a conflict between two street gangs. Florencia 13, which is a Latino gang, and East Crips, which is a black gang, had a street war over having control of the drug trade in Florence and Firestone, this later became seen as a racial war between both gangs (Quinones, 2007). Marking and respecting territory have been societal factors that tend to fuel tension between both races. I completed my undergraduate degree at the California State University of Los Angeles (CSULA), which is a very diverse campus as well.…

The United States of America has forever been a nation of immigrants. Native Americans were robbed of their land by European settlers hundreds of years ago and today, we all live in a multicultural country that is still facing trouble managing to get along with one another. The English, Spanish, and French all competed for the North American land and now, much of the colonization is embedded within American culture. Aside from that, the migrants that came after have also left their print from all over the world. Immigration to the U.S. has formed a unique society that not many other countries can compete with.…

Although my goal is relatively simple, the journey to succeed can be overall difficult and challenging. Some obstacles that lie ahead for me are due to race.
