Diversity is everywhere from the clothing we wear to the food we eat even our hairstyles. I feel that diversity can be both physical as well as other little factors such as class, neighborhood culture, schools we attend. etc In my personal life I have always been exposed and open to cultural differences and diversity of people because that is something my grandma felt she wasn’t exposed to. Starting with the fact I am African American and my family is from the south and I hang out with mostly Hispanic people some from here some not. That alone is a culture shock. I had to learn a lot from the

I have lived my life as a white, heterosexual, upper middle-class male. The community I grew up in, Ann Arbor, openly embraced these representative markers, and usually allowed me to remain in the majority. The situations in which I was in the majority, with respect to class, race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., have far outnumbered the situations in which I was in the minority. To put it simply, I have almost always been welcomed. Yet this seemed to magnify my perceptions for when I was in the minority.…

I attended Rolling Meadows High School where twenty-five percent of the students are Hispanic, and that was my first real experience with different cultures, and different races. Growing up in a white community, a lot is different in my day-to-day life that I do not understand, and frankly, do not know about what it feels to grow up beautiful.…

And it was a culture shock, because some things I was familiar with were practically rare to them. For example many didn't know what Enchiladas were and since I'm Latina, it amazed me because where I come from that's a common Mexican cuisine. In addition,we all had many different views on relevant issues like immigration, gun control, etc. I met a girl who knew how to hunt so that brought an interesting perspective on the issue of gun control. Because in Santa Ana it's rare to find someone who can hunt because it's an urban area.…

I understand that I have lived through the theorist perspective of a salad bow and not a melting pot as I have always lived where there is large concentration of specifics groups. For example when I was living in upper Manhattan I was mostly around Dominicans and other Latinos and when I lived in Stroudsburg I was mostly around Caucasians. And then at Guttman most of my peers were predominantly Black. To put in another way my position is that although, I have been relatively surrounded by specific groups, overall I think these transitions have helped me become well rounded and understand the importance of diversity.…

New York is one of the most diverse states in America and, quite arguably, the world. Although it may seem like an audacious statement to make it is very well supported as a tourist could stop anyone on the streets of Manhattan alone and meet people from countries all over the world, and from a thousand different walks of life. Having such a mixed culture is just one of the things that New York is famous for. However diversity is not just limited to this one state in particular. The Northern states have always been a little bit more open to ethnic and racial diversity when compared to the Southern states.…

Everyone on this planet is equal and perfectly different. We are young and grown-up, tall and short, dark and fair-skinned. We are those who make our planet look the way it does now. Why have I started with these lines? I believe in this idea: that everybody can live equally in this life; and have a dream to influence others to believe the same thing.…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…
