To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. Thus, becoming this leader and being elected and inducted as the president of the York Suburban Trojan Theatre Club is my most impressive achievement in leadership. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Being a senior in showchoir is a challenge! Many of the underclassmen look to you for advice or seek help when they need it. My leadership skills were also pushed last year and this year for “Dancing with the Teachers”, which is a show the showchoir puts on early in the school year. We are split into groups of about 6 or 7 out of the 40 or so members, and then we must select a teacher to be in each of our groups. We, being the seniors, then have to create a mix of songs and a dance to perform in this show.…

In middle school, I found myself to be more quiet, shy, and less outspoken than my peers. I joined all the same clubs and had the same interests as my peers, such as student council and National Junior Honors Society, but my introverted personality kept me from exploring new leadership roles. As I finished middle school and began my high school career, I brought my introverted personality with me. As first semester progressed, I joined clubs in school that encouraged an open mind and voice, specifically Key Club International, the world's largest, student-led, community service organization. Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
