Improved Essays
Dear readers, In this portfolio, I have included four different parts of my writing. Firstly, I would love to talk about my “Best Writing Piece Ever”. This part is quite personal to me because it is based on my own writing and the piece that I have selected is truly from my heart and I have put mg great effort on writing it. It is an academic paper that I wrote for one of the courses that I have taken for this semester. From the feature of the language used, of course, it is not considered under the best because it is actually a technical paper that has a relation with writing a research paper. However, the fact that this paper has enabled me to explore countless new things that I have never thought before is what made me want to

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

It is understandable that this piece might be seen as in need of the most improvement. While it is not the worst in a sense of technicality or grammar, I feel that it suffers from a lack of opinion. I think this piece is my worst because it has no strong message or new information. It may be correct academically, but it is almost a waste of a paper since it doesn’t add any substantial knowledge to myself as a student. This perspective might be a little harsh on myself, however I think it dramatically illustrates my later improvement when compared to my last few essays.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. After accumulating a multitude of source I find myself only taking very limited information from them. Although all the sources I find are solid, I also often times find myself using the same information from each source. With this my papers sometimes become repetitive and make it harder to read. For this portfolio, I have chosen three papers that I believe depict both my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, how I’ve grown as a writer, and how I still have an immense gap for development in my writing as it is early in my writing career in college.…
