Reflective Essay: Being Part Of The Lgbtq Community

When I first realized I was gay, it did not seem like a big difference. Some exciting stuff happened, like gay marriage becoming legal and meeting a group of friends who were also part of the lgbtq community. As time went on I trended towards music, art, literature, almost anything as long as I felt accepted or represented. I became more political as it became clear that more people than I could have imagined would like to take away my basic rights or the rights of those in my community. I could not understand how others were not keeping up in the realm of politics, why they were not as loud as me when it came to the same issues. As a young woman it seemed that she should be involved in the betterment of her world and of her gender. By dwelling on it for several days I came to a conclusion. I did not get a choice in being political. Being part of the lgbtq asked me from the time I entered it to fight for my rights. We couldn’t stop with marriage and we haven’t since. But it pushed me to be political, asked me to be aware and ready in the fight for my rights. As a person I am easily defined as loud, opinionated, politically engaged. That is who I am. But I almost was not. At the beginning of this essay I said it seemed that being gay is not a big difference, and when you strip things to the bare bones it is not. But things can’t be stripped down like that if you want to see the whole picture. The whole picture is that my life took a divergent path because I am ganando because I entered into a community that asked more of me then would have otherwise been asked.
