Reflective Essay: Assessing The SAT Test

Improved Essays
Assessing the SAT Test The main test I recall taking is the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), no known as just the SAT, the test that a majority of high school students take in order to gain entrance into college. In fact, 1.7 million students took the SAT in 2015 with 41.9% meeting the college and career readiness benchmark (College Board, 2015). I remember the anxiety of underperforming and not getting into the school of my choice, the dreadful feeling that my future hung by one number. Worse, I had my first attack of multiples sclerosis two weeks before and was going through multiple diagnostic procedures and doctors’ appointment so my mind was not exactly on studying. Ultimately, I did not do my best but still gained entrance into college …show more content…
I would also make modifications, if necessary, for students who might have disabilities or language barriers. Similarly, I would offer assistance with career or technical education advice as outlined in the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 2006 which offers federal funding and stresses accountability for career and technical training programs (Drummund, Sheperis, and Jones, 2015). For those students who plan on attending college I would advise incoming high school students to choose wisely when planning their high school classes, that while they might have gained enough credits to graduate that students should look into more challenging AP courses so that colleges view them as driven to succeed. I would also encourage them to think outside of the box, I would stress academics but also activities that allow the college to see the whole person. MIT has actually begun to allow students to submit videos of experiments or projects they have created to aid in the admissions process. Students in Singapore are required to complete a group project that grades their ability to work as a team, apply what they have learned, and communicate effectively (Gray, 2015). It is apparent that colleges are looking more at the individual and want well-rounded students, not just students that test well. Therefore, students should plan their high school path with challenging classes and engaging extracurricular

After high school, most students attend college in order to become qualified for a successful future career. In today’s society, attending a top-rated university or Ivy League institution is seen as the ticket for embarking on such a path. Yet because these programs are so competitive, the application process has become unnecessarily devastating, involving extensive test prep, unending academic pressure, exhaustive hours of extracurricular activities that may or may not earn a student an impressive mark of distinction, and emotionally draining interviews, campus visits, and networking events. The message revolving around college admissions is even worse than the agony of the application process itself—a message that a student’s worth and value…

Honestly, I am not a very motivated person. I tend to try hard in school for the sole purpose of receiving an A. I never had thought of learning as an activity, but rather a priority. A priority that exists once again, for the purpose of getting an A. In my head, if I received an A, I would feel secure and my life would be able to move along smoothly. Receive a B, and my whole world would stop. Sadly, it seemed almost impossible for me to receive even close to a B when it came to writing.…

On the first day of school, I remember walking into class and seeing all of the new people in my class. I also remember meeting all of my new teachers. I had no idea how much that I would learn, and I had no idea how much I would struggle to learn the new material. One particular class that I feel that I have learned a lot in is WHAP. WHAP stands for world history AP.…

There are several factors for me wanting to transfer to Simpson College. I went to high school in Indianola and I like the small town feel along with the big city competitiveness. Indianola is a place that I have had great leaders and experiences that my children, in the future, would be able to learn and experience life, like I did. In high school, I had the privilege to be taught and mentored by Kevin Barnes, who also went to Simpson College. He talked highly about Simpson College and everything he had accomplished there; so, I've always been intrigued by the idea of receiving an education and competing there as well.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

I would first like to thank you for taking the time to read through my writing evaluation for this past semester. Secondly, I would like to ask if you have ever watched a little league soccer game. Has it ever been one of your own young family members? On each team, there is typically at least one child who is very athletic for his or her age and tends to make the most shots compared to all of the other young children just running around the field. While this child may be the best on the team, or even in the entire league, he or she is still just a young player and has much to improve on before he or she is ready to compete in the big leagues.…

Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…

"The SAT is not perfect. We all know smart, knowledgeable people who do badly on standardized tests” (Postrel 1). Even some of the wisest people have agreed that the SAT and other standardized tests are not valid indicators of a student's potential for success in college. In fact, they have said that standardized exams can be counterproductive for students trying to study to become better students in high school and improve their appeal to colleges. Colleges should not be allowed to use standardized exams as a main indicator of college readiness.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

Before even entering high school, I made a decision that would ruin the next few years. Looking back, I had no idea it would have impacted me as much as it did, but even now I still wouldn’t have changed that decision. Everything that came after that decision, no matter how difficult, shaped me into who I am today, and I was able to meet some pretty amazing people and do a few things only a handful of people can say they’ve done. In elementary school, I was in the S.C.O.P.E. (Spotsylvania County Program of Enrichment) program, my county’s way of separating out students who they considered gifted and a distraction in the classroom.…
