Reflective Essay: As I Carry As A Gates Scholarship

Improved Essays
As a Gates scholar, one of the main values that I carry is to give back to my community. Therefore, I volunteered as an ambassador in order to spread the word about the scholarship, initially volunteering at my very own high school. In being an ambassador, I found that my position transitioned from being a scholar to becoming a mentor. I was expected to help applicants apply and analyze their scholarships essays which I had never done before. Therefore, having written similar essays myself, I decided to attempt it. As unfamiliar as I was with this task it did not stop me from diving in blindly but ambitiously. I spent a considerable amount of time mentoring and revising two applicants’ essays. On the first weekend working on their essays, they struggled on how to begin, …show more content…
At times that they were clueless, I remind them of how far they have written. When they were finished editing their essays, I created a checklist of criteria that the essays had met. After three months of intensive work, my efforts finally paid off as my mentee Ahmed was awarded the Gates scholarship. I realized that although this task seemed daunting at first, I learned to brush aside conflicting thoughts and focus on the bigger goal. In doing so, I trusted my instincts and my mentorship abilities because I saw progress in my mentees’ work. Upon assisting my mentees, I learned some crucial mentorship skills. From this experience, I was be able to learn how to give constructive criticism and help them help themselves, instead of giving free answers. I also learned to to motivate my mentees to finish their applications and work as a team through effective communication skills. Lastly, I came to value the relationships I had developed and the learning journey we were on together despite the

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Looking back on the last four years of my life as a student of English, I have come to the conclusion that they were years well spent. Throughout these four years, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that is indispensable, and will be of great value to me in the career path I am pursuing. I take pride in the fact that I am not just an English major, but have concentrated in Advanced Composition and Rhetoric. This sense of dignity; however, was not always at the forefront of my mind or even considered, for on more than one occasion I had doubts concerning the process, and even became somewhat antagonistic towards the requirements I had to take to complete the process. These feelings of doubts and antagonism stem from the…

I think I learned that many times we won’t be able to tell if a person is dealing with something traumatic in their life by the way they look and act. This experience also taught me that sometimes in the social work field you have to think quickly and efficiently. While we didn’t have much planning time to prepare for the event, I personally thought it went well considering the time constraint. I think this is an important skill for social workers to have because many times we will have clients and agencies test our ability to think and prepare quickly. Lastly I also learned that when young adults or children are exposed to college or even the idea of a higher education it really gives them the chance to consider…

It is my pleasure to recommend Chauncey Boggs for the Mosbacher Institute International Trade internship. My acquaintance with Chauncey began during her first semester at the Bush School in the course, PSAA 601 Foundations of Public Policy. Chauncey excelled with the first writing assignment in my class. She initially expressed that she had little experience writing memos and arranged to meet with myself and Cindy Rasor at the Writing Workshop to better understand graduate school writing expectations. More importantly, Chauncey made a point of drafting her memo early enough to receive feedback.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Before matriculating I was blessed to receive a scholarship through the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Awarded to students who show commitment to both academics and diversity by excelling in the field of academia and making a positive impact in their communities. This positive impact is what John Quincy Adams meant when he said, “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” This is critical to the mission of Semester at Sea through the context of global understanding. I have exemplified leadership through the advocacy for equity and access by contributing to those around me.…

Reading the book Everyday Ambassador by Kate Otto changed my life for the better. The book had gave me a whole new, entirely different approach on how to view the world, to lead with better direction, and to make new relations and connect with the people around me and in my community. I was really happy that Kent State University chose this book for the common reading discussion, because it was such a thrill to read it and relate to some of the experiences in the book. On the topic of Prompt 1: While reading the book Everyday Ambassador, I had discovered that the 4 main key values of being an Everyday Ambassador had summed up into the following.…

My first semester at college has made me become more independent, willing to push outside of my comfort zones, open-minded, and able to persevere through isolation. Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Sneaky foxes, obnoxious tragedies, and ACT English test prepping helped to shape me into the writer I am today. Walking into the classroom of my last high school English class, I distinctly remember the musty smell of teenage stress and overpriced Gucci perfume. I straightened out my blue suit shirt and said to myself “I am going to get an A in this class.” I sat by my ramen-loving friend in the back left corner of the room, opened my pink sparkly binder, and began imagining how fun it would be to read The Great Gatsby. However, as the class started and the annoying jeopardy school bell rang in my ear, all I could think about was the “fish n’ chips” lunch that I would be receiving in exactly fifty-three minutes.…
