Reflective Essay: An Immigration To The US

My parents have always said that it was an exasperating decision trying to name me. They flipped through a multitude of name books and could never agree on anything. The moment did not come until I was born, at first glance, my mom knew I was an Urszula and my dad could not deny it. Urszula. The name alone stands for “little bear;” a strong-willed and motivated animal. I am Urszula. I am a first generation college student and a naturalized U.S. citizen. I am the girl whose family immigrated to the United States when I was only four years old, and every moment since then has shaped me into the person I am today.

Most people argue that a name does not make a person, that instead the person makes the name. This is true to some extent but with my name, I inherited much more- a drive and exuberant passion to learn and help others that has never faltered.

From the very beginning of my education, I have always stretched myself further. Being a young immigrant was hard because of the heavy discrimination I was shown. My teachers told my parents that I should have been enrolled in ESOL and that I was evidently going to fail. I surprised

No matter what I participated in, I felt the need to go further until I was doing everything to my ability. I remember being young and always asking tons of questions about how things worked and why. When I joined my first club, I thought, “Why can’t we do more?” This was when my leadership potential started to exude and I began organizing events by myself. My favorite accomplishment is starting the first Matanzas High School Buddy Walk Team with my friends this year. The Buddy Walk raises funds for children in my community with Down syndrome. Our first fundraising goal was $800, but we quickly surpassed it and then raised $1,069.00. It was phenomenal to be able to raise so much money our first year and to see the smiles on the children’s faces when we
