Reflective Essay: An Evaluation Of College Level Writing Class

Superior Essays
I would first like to thank you for taking the time to read through my writing evaluation for this past semester. Secondly, I would like to ask if you have ever watched a little league soccer game. Has it ever been one of your own young family members? On each team, there is typically at least one child who is very athletic for his or her age and tends to make the most shots compared to all of the other young children just running around the field. While this child may be the best on the team, or even in the entire league, he or she is still just a young player and has much to improve on before he or she is ready to compete in the big leagues. I can directly relate to these small “super stars”; although not in soccer, but in my writing.

In my previous high school English courses, I thought I was a superior writer when it came to summaries and other papers such as annual book reports. As I advanced to a college level writing class this year, I soon realized that much like the young soccer players competing in the big leagues, I had a long way to go to reach the appropriate standard. Although, through taking the online course of English 1

I find the handouts that Mrs. Forster gives us very helpful to know exactly how long my essay is supposed to be, what each paragraph needs to be about, and what to pay most attention to while writing. Also, what has seemed most important to me this semester has been the use of an online thesaurus. When I am writing and cannot think of the best word choice for the sentence, I use a thesaurus. When I am revising and know that my vocabulary in the sentence could improve, I use a thesaurus. Even though it seems like a small tool for writing compared to even our Patterns for College Writing textbook, it was by far the most helpful for me in transforming my essays from decent to

Exercising My Writing Skills Writing is evolving by the day in the English language, in other words communication is evolving on the daily since writing is our main source of communication. Learning how to write the English language in an academic setting has been one of my greatest accomplishments as a scholar, despite the fact that, I am still learning new skills daily on how to improve my writing. Even though, I am not the best the writer, I have gained enough strength in my writing to separate me from the average writer. In other words, the best way to improve on something is by practicing, and that is a lesson writing papers has taught me. One of my greatest skills as a writer in my opinion is being able to expand on a topic.…

My ultimate goal from attending the Academy would be to look in the mirror at the end of the four years and see a man who has grown physically stronger, mentally wiser, and morally cleaner than the seventeen year old who is currently typing this essay. To transform this goal from a pipe dream to a reality would take a tremendous amount of hard work and diligence. However, despite my many shortcomings, these two traits are something that I possess with abundance. After initially struggling to adapt to the physicality and technique of travel and varsity soccer, I came to the brutal conclusion that I will never possess the talent or skill that many of my competitors contain. I realized that in order to close the talent divide that stretched before me, I was going to have to outwork my competitors in every possible way.…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

A Lesson Learned My senior year was a complete disaster. I never took anything serious, and I always waited till the last minute to do everything. All throughout my senior year teachers told me I needed to push myself to achieve a higher grade although my stubborn self never listened. When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…

This year’s English course has been more challenging than usual, I am generally accustomed to doing well enough without really trying or learning in English courses. It’s possible that I may have succeeded in improving in my writing skills so far this year; I better understand how to use sentence length, my claims are stronger than they were previously, and my grade appears to be improving. My OCE essays were completed in multiple drafts. From very rough, to slightly less rough, and then to nearly spotless. Although I will admit that I don’t always use class time because I can’t concentrate well enough to write at school, there are too many sights and sounds.…
