Reflective Essay: An Apology

While your email started with an apology, it ended with my being upset and insulted. I am extremely offended that you would say: "I can't understand why you would work against promoting music." My email was not about the hesitation of sharing a space or worry about damaged equipment, it was based on my repeated concern regarding the CBWS not fulfilling part of an agreement. For the use of thousands of dollars of GHS music department equipment, I have simply asked that the CBWS provide me with an equipment list for outside performances. To be clear, our district policy states that NO school equipment is allowed to leave district buildings. However, instead of complying, I have simply asked you for a list (again) and have received nothing. To me, that implies a lack of professional respect.

Yes, when I was hired six years ago I was extremely uncomfortable with the idea of equipment traveling away from the building. However, instead stopping a past practice, I continued the tradition, in order to “promote music" and help a wonderful community band.
Although I appreciate the $300 that CBWS donates to the GHS band program, I don’t

And while I appreciated the CBWS wish to program more summer concerts at venues outside of GHS, the use of GHS equipment for outside performances has been a privilege, not a right. Just because the CBWS rehearses and performs at GHS doesn’t mean that it is Gorham’s responsibility and obligation to furnish equipment for outside performances. This is not a question of not supporting community groups, collaborating, or music-making, it is simply a continuing problem that has gone beyond respect and professional

As students rush into class, Shannon Anderson, the White Bear South Campus Band Director, sits patiently in her office, wearing her casual band jacket with her last name on it. As students come into her office to ask her questions, she remains calm and is very friendly. “To me, caring for the students is more important than caring about the music”, says Mrs. Anderson while answering questions that range from counting music all the way to relationship advice. Mrs. Anderson’s drive for music became present while she was in band in the 6th grade. Her passion for teaching she says was different, she always loved to play school with her brother, and always wanted to become a teacher from the time she was little.…

This year, our Marching Band got the chance to go to Nashville, Tennessee where we encountered the different musical culture they had. We attended The Grand Ole Opry, a concert where many talented country musicians performed live in a giant hall. It was a fascinating experience when we learned about the musician’s lives through their music and what they consider everyday aspect of their lives that we don’t have farther up north. One of the band members got the opportunity to participate in a dance off onstage during one of the breaks, something the whole band celebrated in camaraderie. A museum with all things country music, “Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum” held all kinds of pieces from various dresses and instruments of musicians from…

I truly believe it’s extremely important for supports to acknowledge and understand that this is extremely special because, the situation these students are in. Having the money, quality instruments, and a new team is not going to make Landfill Harmonic project greater. What the project needs is support for what they are doing. Supply more building materials, more tools to build, alternative ways to teach how to play, and an audience. Respecting what these students, Mr. Chavez, and Nicholas have done is a great cross-cultural skill that would help others understand the benefits of the Landfill Harmonic…

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…

The building for our band lies beside our football field, the spectacle of the campus. The small band building looks small compared to the large field, but shines just as bright to those who understand its value. It’s brick exterior is painted with the colors of our school and the words “CCHS Marching Band.” Behind the flat building lays a field with small lines and often soccer goals.…

The band feels confident as they step onto the turf, tune into their music, and perform the greatest halftime show they can. No one outside the band can directly relate to the work and dedication it took to memorize, perform and believe in the show- most outsiders do not understand what we take away from and desire from our performance. On Wednesday nights, the band gets together to rehearse and motivate each other. A very important ritual to the band is “The Drum Major send off” at the end of every rehearsal. The Drum Majors inspire and motivate the band by offering advice and expressing their gratitude.…

People are always looking for someone to lead them. We all need someone to look to for help or inspiration, whether it be a movie star, author, or even a teacher. Was it really true that we would perform in such a big event? We all looked at our instructor, and his face was enough to tell us that this was no joke. He further explained that three other drumline would be joining us, and that we would begin practice at Center Grove High School in the coming month. When the time came, my friends and I eagerly step foot into a new band room, and perhaps our greatest musical journey began. For many weeks, we continued with business as usual, working to perfect our school’s show for competition.…
