Reflective Essay About Writing Class

Improved Essays
When this class first began, what seems like over a year ago, I was a fledgling college writer. I was a novice in college, with basic writing skills. Since that time, so long ago, I have become a moderately better writer. I have gotten a handle on the writing process of narratives, which I previously was very out of practice on. Even writing prose such as the following: “The air in Autumn is so fresh, and clean, and cool. Unfettered for a while from the smog and the fumes we usually inhale” (Essay 1) Beyond that, I have learned how to read things in a way that addresses the topic in an academic manner. Seeing beyond the surface level of readings, and papers. I have also learned how to critically analyze my own texts and writing, when I started …show more content…
I have never gotten a good grasp on writing narratives before, I always feel they are a bit rococo, but I have learned that a paper can have narrative elements while still being an academic piece, a foreign idea to me before this class. I always thought that in order for a piece to be academic, it had to be purely idea and evidence, without personal perspective. Learning this has allowed me to write about topics from multiple perspectives and ultimately create a more persuasive style of writing. I have furthered my ability, and implementation of reading past the first level of the texts in order to get a deeper understanding of literature. I applied this to my writing when it came to picking sources, because any manner of texts can be examined on an academic level, but those same texts can also be examined simply on the surface. For example, in Paper two, using sources about ethics, such as “Ethics in the Real World” which is a book about ethical theory written by a highly regarded writer. On …show more content…
For example, in paper 2 I used sources from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, a source by a extremely credible world famous horse trainer, and a source about animal ethics to name a few. In addition to learning how to work many sources into my writing fairly seamlessly, I have also gotten better at including my sources, and knowing how to format them. Before this class I had to put all my citations through a citation generator, now I am able to create them myself. I also used to use less credible sources like Wikipedia, and .com websites, versus the sites I used for this class like Jeremy Bentham Utilitas (paper 2). I have discovered that in using better sources the possibility of bias is less, which makes the piece in question more credible still. This was helped through Professor Shepard making sure the class learned how to use worldcat, which enables you to search for the most relevant sources for any given topic. This allowed me to narrow my searches, streamline the process of finding sources and information, and spend more time on my writing. This also allowed me to use more credible sources, and find reference pieces I would have a hard time finding on my

Academic writings are fundamental to expanding and solidifying knowledge and understanding. Axiomatic to the objective nature of the writing is the existence of persuasive source material acting to support the argument put forth. For this purpose, critical evaluation of sources should be meticulously undertaken so as to ensure a strong and competent argument has been assembled. The sources themselves can take on many different forms depending on the discipline being examined and written in, however all sources can be classified into two distinctive categories; either Primary or Secondary sources. To understand the use of such source material, this paper will examine how David Nasaw combined the use of primary and secondary sources when creating…

Incorporating research material from sources was the easiest of all the techniques I had to complete throughout the semester. For example, my research paper had 10 sources that I had to integrate throughout my paper. I accomplished this by reading through the articles and picking out key ideas that supported my research without taking the author(s) statements completely out of context. Thankfully, my professor showed me a cool tip at the beginning of the year, which was writing notes and highlighting key things within the articles. This provided me with an overview of the important information and made it easier to pull out what I needed to support my…

Upon reading chapter 5 from Holdstein’s “Who says? The Writer’s Research” I found myself faced with a number of ideas I had been unfamiliar with. After thoroughly examining this chapter, I realized that previously, I hadn’t properly evaluated resources, which is a mistake I made as someone who gathers research and analyzes various ideas in my writing. Throughout this chapter, I took notice that I, as a writer, have three main responsibilities: conducting a thorough search for sources using the proper key words, carefully and meticulously, yet efficiently analyzing sources, and determining the rationality of a source. While these ideas may present themselves as challenging, as I had been previously unfamiliar with them, if I acquire the proper…

    Mike Bunn Argument Essay

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

As you requested, I am writing to share my past writing experiences which include what kinds of writing I have done in school, the feedback that I seek on my work before I turn in assignments, the memories that I have of writing, voluntary writing I have done, and much more. Past Experiences with Writing Previous to this course I have taken several mandatory English, Writing, and Literature courses in which I have gained experience that now impact the way I write. In high school, I took my basic English & Writing courses, along with an Advanced Placement English IV course, in which the teacher persuaded me to join the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and compete in the Ready Writing Competition, in which I won first place in the…

I have written more of these than I can count, and have started to understand how to structure these and format them. Included in this extensive training is the implementation of citations. Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. It is an inarguable fact that the most important quality for any author or researcher is the ability to use sources well. Whether you are composing an economic survey, a scientific study, or even a personal account, being able to coherently and clearly represent outside sources in your work is crucial. The difficulty, however, lies not in acknowledging this fact, but in actually learning to effectively integrate texts into your writing. Using a source cannot be limited to stamping out another author’s exact viewpoints and arguments without extrapolation, nor is it a matter of stringing up an opponent to use as a rhetorical punching bag. The truth about utilizing another individual’s work is that it takes a huge amount of understanding, insightfulness,…
