Reflective Essay About The Bardwell Scholarship

I was in desperate need of mentorship and financial assistance when I first learned about the Bardwell Scholarship over 15 years ago. One of my mentors, Gaylord Bogguess introduced me to Hedy and I immediately felt a connection to her. At the same time, I was nervous because I am most certain I had the worst grades and GPA at Harold Washington College at the time. My first few attempts at HWC were catastrophic and I was not in the proper headspace to be a successful college student. My GPA had slid under a 2.0 and I was not the ideal candidate for a scholarship. However, despite this, Hedy did not give up on me because she saw potential in me that I could not see in myself. The guidance and generosity I received through the Bardwell Scholarship helped me get focused and I pulled my GPA up by the close of the semester. However, I dropped out of school because I simply was not ready to embark on the commitment it takes to be a successful student. Once I left, I lost touch with Hedy, but unexpectedly reconnected with her at a ceremony for a scholarship I won at the end of the school year.

Over ten years later, I went back to the only college that truly felt like my home and I was more than ready to be a productive student. I took out student loans and ran up credit cards to pay for my education because I was determined to graduate

It is a great pleasure to recommend Rachel Sitasz for admission to the Edward Hospital Student Volunteer Program. She is one of the most empathetic, kind, and exceptional humans I have encountered in my 14 years of teaching. I teach Rachel in my 8th grade advanced ELA class. Her academics, character, innate curiosity, intrinsic motivation, ethical standards, and unwavering desire to give back, have put Rachel in a class of her own. In fact, for the first time in over 25+ years, the eighth-grade team created a brand new end-of-the-year award for our graduation awards assembly.…

There are so many students out there in low-income communities who do not know what it is like to have someone who wants to see them succeed, someone who wants to see them achieve regardless of their race or economic status. I seek to join Teach for America for many reasons and three of those reasons are; for one, I want to help make a difference in the lives of students, I want the students that I encounter to know that I care about their education, I want to see them succeed and I want them to know that I have very high expectation of them. Secondly, growing up in a low-income community myself, I can relate to these students. I want my students to know that just because they are currently living in an underserved community, it does not mean…

As a current senior in high school, the time of graduation can be stressful and I am finally figuring out what I want to do with my life. I learned about life lessons and without them I do not know if I would be able to say I am academically and emotionally ready for college. I am planning on attending Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.…

My decision to return to college was purely random. There was no pondering over the decision; no weighing in the pros and cons, no thinking it through or any real thought behind it. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself “I think I’ll go back to college” and I made the call. I called the College of New Rochelle and made the appointment for the admissions test. And before I knew what was actually happening, I was a matriculated college student.…
