As seniors in high school we have a lot on our plates. From all the school activities to thinking about college and post secondary plans, it can become quite stressful and overwhelming. It is times like these where you can either crash and burn or rise above the situations and succeed. There is a large amount of pressure on high school students and sometimes that causes them to act in a way that they will regret in the future. When I become stressed I tend to seclude myself, reflect on the issues, and rethink my goals to rise above the challenge.
Some people find ways to escape stress negatively, whether that be with alcohol, drugs, or violence. Unfortunately I can say that someone very close to me choose to make some poor decision to forget about all the struggles in life. That person is my Father. My Dad used to smoke when he was younger, but when he married my mother he decided to stop. However, recently we caught him smoking again. We figured out that this horrible act has been going on for months; my dad has been lying and smoking behind our backs.

I am the eldest of the five children in my family, and when this event occurred I felt as if I needed to step up and be the man of the house. My siblings didn’t have a fatherly figure role model that they could trust anymore. They we scared and they wanted to find comfort and peace, because my dad that that us children knew and loved, betrayed us. I learned how to become a more responsible individual. I knew I was going to have to help my entire family through this. The responsibility aspect of the situation helped me grow to be a better person. Since then I have come a long way in terms of how responsibly I am. I am now more accountable, and reliable when someone is in need of my assistance. I also understand substance abuse and it’s addiction to the user, and why they might choose it as a stress
