Personal Narrative: My Concept Of Family

Improved Essays
For so many people in our world home is just about a house. Simply about the beds, appliances, furniture. For some maybe a wooden hut is what they consider their home or a small city apartment. Whatever it may be, generally a lot of people see their home as just a building. For me I do not consider a brick building with a green metal roof, white siding and a big backyard to be my home. Home can be more than this however. It can really be in any form, to me home is a sense of family. Whether it be my immediate family but also in the aspect of a closely knitted small town family. A sense of sacrifice for one another, family, and a close knitted small town is what I consider home.
Family is an important ingredient into the combination of things I consider home. Family is about making memories and sharing the things you learn and experience with them. It’s about sharing the enormous meals of turkey and warm rolls we have together on Thanksgiving Day. Eating together and reflecting on what we’ve been blessed with over the years. Then enjoying a football game after the dinner or just talking. Its about spending quality time developing closer bonds with one another, laughing together in the good times and crying in the bad. The key importance to my concept of home as family is that family goes beyond my personal family. To me home is also about my community because after all community is family.

Living in a small town, being in a place that is down to earth and friendly. A place that is safe and secure, where when you have a problem, an entire community of family is there waiting for you. A place where people sacrifice their time for you as if your blood family. Where you don’t have to be rushed by everything in our world and you can actually connect with individuals and grow relationships. It’s about the idea of a small town acting as a large family. A place that you can call

Sonsyrea Tate once said, “You can leave home all you want, but home will never leave you.” This statement gives light to a higher meaning of the word “home” than merely a place to live. Many people look at home as a place or a dwelling, but not many people see home as a state of mind; however, home is a state of mind. The Architizer defines home as a complex, interpretational, and unique way of organizing and understanding the space within ourselves and the way the world around us is constructed (Linda Bennett, "Architizer"). With this definition, one can assume that “home” includes heavy influences on feelings, thought, and actions.…

Home is different from a house since it has sentimental values attached to them: it represents not only a place of dwelling, but also a community where a family belongs. Due to the trend of linking affection with the family, home is essentially a place that provides one with warmth, comfort, love, sense of acceptance, and stability. But those attitudes toward home are not always found in everyone; one may be innately be adverted from it, like the case of many adventure-takers such as Robinson Crusoe. And there are the ones who find the home as a utopia, such as in the case of Candide. Even though two men start with two different views on the meaning of home, one being dull and another being comfortable, through their journey, two men make…
