What is communication? The answers will vary from basic answer such as “ Talking to another person” to more academic appealing definitions such as “ The sharing of ideas, information, knowledge and opinions while interacting with oneself or another person.” Whatever the real definition may be, I believe that communication is all about creating meaning. Language is a very broad structured system of symbols that allow people to express ideas and feelings to others.The fact that we process language does not always mean that we are communicating well and in a proper manner. I truly believe that this simile holds some truth. Us humans, including myself are naturally curious and spontaneous. I especially classify myself that way when trying to learn a new language out of the blue. Language is a lifelong element that can be carried at anytime and anywhere. When trying to learn the language of portuguese I thought it would be effortless and it would just come to me since I am already fluent in spanish. Yet, I was terribly wrong. They are actually quite unalike especially when it comes to the grammar. As I continued to try to learn portuguese I was doing a lot better than I originally thought, I picked up on the basics such as “ como você está ? ” which is “ How are you? ” in english and “ Olá meu nome é Oxzana! “ which means “ Hello my name is Oxzana!”. As I attempted to pick up more challenging phrases I felt more confident and asked a fellow coworker who is a native brazilian to judge my portuguese. Alcy, who is my fellow co worker said my pronunciation was great, but he did not have a clue to what I was trying to convey. Apparently my grammar was all over the place. All I could about was that google translate has failed me and I should actually do research and take the initiative to learn the grammar rules if I wanted to be successful. I was made aware of many new tips that I can not only use now but also for the rest of my life. I learned how truly important grammar is not only in the languages that I speak, but also every other language on this planet. I now know that I can not merely learn all the complexities of a new language by just being exposed to it from time to time. If I wanna master a language I need to take the initiative to not only learn the basic but also the grammar rules. Some people believe that communication is simple and that it is just about talking to others. Yet, the other half of people including myself know that it is more than that and studying it is life long knowledge. Studying Communication develops important life skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, team building, and public speaking. Personally I think those concepts are key to living a good life. For example, If one struggles with critical thinking it is going to be a long and stressful life.
