Honestly I didn’t expect what he responded, the teacher said “look why would I waste my time teaching you if you are either going to end doing laborers jobs or end up in prison” . The anger and sadness was a mixture of feeling I havent had since that day. Therefore, how would I graduate from 8th grade if I didn’t wanted to go to class since I felt those emotions each time I saw him. The author Anzaldúa mentions
(page.110)

Being the co-founder of a club is a challenge that can be overcomed with strong resilience skills and the desire to pursue a clear goal. When my partner and I were thinking about starting something new, we focused on things that we either cared about or enjoyed doing. Since we were both undocumented, I brought up the idea of creating a club that would unite students together regardless of their citizenship status. As a result, we created the Latinos United Club. In my mind I pictured a club that will balance educational and cultural support.…

Although people assume otherwise, I am Latina, and I'm proud to be a part of that community. I obtain my Latin blood from my father, who moved to the United States from Uruguay as a child. My parents divorced each other when I was young; however, when I was with him for either the weekend or the month of July, I embraced all the wonders of my Latin family. Latino culture entails prodigious amounts of cooking, and we always cooked Uruguayan food; it was almost taboo to eat out. From flan to the glorious empanadas, my family always ate homemade meals.…

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. My parents had not graduated high school, therefore once college applications became relevant, they unfortunately could not help me. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". To my dismay, once classes began, I was lost.…

Speaking rom personal experience, I think that most of us miss out on opportunities or even try is because either we do not have knowledge about all that is available to us or we cannot afford what we need to get there. I have been offered many chances to travel for my education, but missed out because my family could not pay to send me. I feel like if I do not have money, then I will not go far in life. Who am I? I regularly take a moment to understand who I am and who I yearn to become. I am first defined by Anglos as an uneducated female. At the same time, to my own ethnicity and culture, I may just be an ordinary female who is destined to grow up to become a respectable and caring housewife. Without questioning these assumptions, there are moments I come to believe I should fall into the expectation.…

Clearly, to those who have read and understood Kanellos’ argument this author does not come to par with the standards of a Hispanic immigrant writer set by Kanellos and therefore Venegas’ novel should not either. However, this novel is a clear representation of the oppression of the working class. For example, in chapter nine when the discussion of the pay checks is brought up: “… there is only one day they get excited and that is payday. That’s when they demonstrate their sadness or joy.” (Page 78).…
