COMM-102 Class Reflection

Improved Essays
Hello, and welcome to my reflection essay for my COMM-102 class portfolio at the University of Charleston. I would like to begin my explaining my background and touching base on how I ended up at this University. I am a transfer student from a Community College in Upstate New York called Herkimer Community College. After two years, I graduated there with an Associate’s Degree in Science, which was helpful with transferring credits to come here. Along with graduating from Herkimer, I also started playing lacrosse there was well. I have always been an athlete, but we didn’t have lacrosse at my high school so when I got to college I thought it would be a fun, new sport to try to learn and an easy way to get involved with the college. Playing lacrosse …show more content…
I’m not sure why that is the case, but I know I am going to try to enroll in COMM-101 over the summer if it is given online. As for COMM-102, I have written 3 different essays so far with this one being the 4th and last one to be completed for the portfolio. The first essay that I completed for this class was titled “Technology Takes Over” and was about how society has become so involved with technology that many people don’t know how to live without it anymore. The essay covered topics which showed that technology has proven to be a major positive aspect in everyone’s lives, but also showed light on the negative sides as well. The second essay that I wrote was about how college athletics benefit student athletes. Some of the reasons I chose that showed that athletics truly do benefit student athletes are because it forces students to be more motivated, helps them to live a healthier lifestyle, and makes them want to do the best they can because of any scholarships they were awarded. The last essay that I wrote was a research paper that was about the effects that divorce has on children growing up. Being a product of that type of family, it was something that I was interested researching and informing the audience what factors can end up effecting a child that has divorced

To get an understanding of the significance of interscholastic competition at the collegiate level, simply turn on the television on a Saturday morning during college football. The sponsors, fans, pageantry, etc., is astronomical and continues to grow exponentially. Undoubtedly, college athletics is “big business” and is often viewed as a separate entity. Duke professor of public policy, economics and law, Charles T. Clotfelter, offers an interesting viewpoint on college athletics, stating faculty members’ blindness to the significance of big-time sports amounts to operating in a parallel universe, which is impossible, because the evidence is all around us and so commonplace (Etizen, 2012). Its difficulty to disagree with Clotfelter because sports are deeply rooted in our society.…

It’s hard to tell where to start when it comes to my experience with SEI. As I reflect on this class and my own career there has been real dichotomy of sorts. In the first half of my career I spent in a very culturally diverse community of Stoughton which had a very high ELL population with little no built in supports for teachers. In the second half of my career in East Bridgewater, there is a very low level of ELL’s with much more support. The biggest take away that I have from this course and my time in the classroom, is there are a number of tools available to teach children with a variety of strengths and weaknesses.…

I’ll never forget the moments of watching all my friends being able to go to the playground and enjoy themselves as I would have to walk to a different classroom to my ESOL class. ESOL was an English practicing class, it allowed for students that knew very few English and was a method for us to learn and practice our English. Towards the end of the class as we all headed back from recess, or in my case from ESOL I would have a short time to speak and talk to my friends, and they would always ask about my whereabouts. I would try to explain to them exactly where I was and what I would be doing, and I knew that they did not fully comprehend me, yet I still tried. I would attend my ESOL class all throughout the third grade, by the beginning of…

I did not need to take English 101 at Nicholls State University because I had already taken the course through a dual enrollment course at my high school. Entering from that class to an actual college English class was very different than what I thought. In the dual enrollment course it was more focused on creative writing than technical writing. In the dual enrollment course it was more of a literature class and I thought college English would resemble that more. We would have an assignments to discuss literature and journals to help us practice writing creatively.…
