Reflective Essay: A Year Analysis

Improved Essays
Out of all my years in a language arts class, this year has been most helpful and I have made most progress. Over the course of this year I have become a master of grammar and vocabulary through our daily activities. I have learned to take people’s advice with my writings. In many past years I would not let other people edit my papers or even read them to give me feedback about the writing but I have learned that other people can see things you may have missed when editing. This year, I have also learned to stay on topic when writing and to not switch back and forth between topics. Another thing I have changed this year is the tense I am using. I have learned that in order for my writings to make sense I have to keep the same tense throughout them. This year I learned it is very important to let people read my essays to give me feedback. When other people read your writings they can see things wrong with it that you maybe didn’t see before. Having other people read or edit your …show more content…
In the past I had a very bad habit of switching from one topic to a completely different one in a sentence. Even though this habit ruined my writing in the past, I have become considerably better at staying on topic. When I go off topic it can be very confusing to the reader and hard to understand. I have worked to get better at staying on topic by planning my writings before I type them so I know what I am going to say and where everything will go. In my Lord of the Flies timed writing I do an exceedingly good job of staying on topic and keeping the essay organized. “One of the many symbols in the book is Piggy’s glasses. Piggy’s glasses are brought up in the beginning of the book and the symbol of them reappear in the book many times after.”(1). In these two sentences I stay on the topic of Piggy’s glasses and don’t trail off to talk about anything else. This year, I have become much better at staying on

Forming a good topic sentence is confusing; also, I always look back at books for editing grammar on how to use commas, colons, and semi-colons properly, and refer to the dictionary and thesaurus for better word choice, which consumes more time rather than writing a draft and generating ideas combined. Therefore, the next time I write paragraphs, I will work more on polishing my draft; by doing so, it will lessen the time needed to edit my draft. All in all , I enjoyed doing the whole writing process, because I feel I am close to writing excellent paragraphs. Disregarding one step from the writing process may seem alright but, for me as a growing writer, I’d love to be challenged by doing it…

My writing has changed; it is easier to write a couple pages and the not be so afraid of writing papers. This is because of the amount I’ve been writing for the class, and how comfortable I was to be able to speak my mind to you. These two pages didn’t faze me. I’ve started not caring so much about what others think about my papers and caring more about how I feel about my papers, as long as I feel like I’ve done a decent job with my paper I feel accomplished enough to turn them in and hope for the best.…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

Things like citations, in text citations, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and so on, have been improved over this semester. When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
