Reflective Essay: A Textual Analysis Of My Writing

As an adult, a wife, a mother and a librarian, I practice written language every day. At no time had anyone raised attention to my writing style, I was positive I communicated properly. I was sure I practised correct grammar and punctuation consistently. My only concerns with writing had been my confidence with abstaining from being 'wordy' together with applying proper referencing. 'Wordiness' is part of my colloquial language, ‘long-winded’ as my family says. It occurred likewise in my written language and would make it unpleasant to read and difficult to follow. The chance to use online tools to analyse my work was awakening. It identified sentence fragments, which I recognise as an intentional effort to cut wordiness; unintentionally destroying effectiveness as a sentence. Web tool, The Writer’s Diet identified overuse of verbs, adverbs, and nouns, respectively representing my use of them as “heart attack”, “flabby” and “needing toning”. This analysis backed by the findings of Paper Rater and Pro Writing Aid, identifying their overuse, adding that my overall word choice contained needlessly complex words and phrases. Here provided insight into how the syntactic rules served together, like excessive use of adverbs relating to nominalisation, and how this had a direct impact on my writing. With new appreciation and awareness of the principals of writing, I plan to make Communications Toolkit my Bible, referring to it when revising future work. I intend on using Grammarly, Pro Writing Aid, Polish My Writing, Paper Rater and The Writer’s Diet, for diagnosing problems with my formal assessments. Then, I intend on studying Communications Toolkit to clarify my understanding of their analysis.
