Reflective Essay: A Career In The Sports Management Field

Improved Essays
When applying for colleges just a year ago, I was unsure of a major. I have always loved sports and everything dealing with them. After researching different majors, I then realized I could find a home in the sports and recreation management field.
The sports management field has opened my eyes to many options already and I’m only in my second semester of college. As of right now, I would like be involved in high school sports possibly as a coach or athletic director. The high school I attended demonstrates great leadership qualities. He always is prepared and has a plan of action in case something goes wrong. He is the type of man everyone wants to sit by at the games. He is always informed on all activities going on around the high school.

An athletic director has many duties to perform for school programs. This job is very difficult to maintain because the director has to be ready for any situations that may arise. Directors have to set up meetings for the coaches and staff in the physical education department to establish new rules or past concerns. The meetings gives the coaches or physical education teachers a chance to express any concerns about equipment, expenses, parents, coaches, unfortunate incidents, and schedules. The definition for an athletic director is “to direct athletic activities, supervise the coordination of athletic events and manage athletic department budgets at secondary and post-secondary schools.”…

Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…

This class on Race, Gender, Class in Sports has made me think of things that I never even thought of before. I played sports, but never thought anything more than I played the sport and I enjoyed it, I never thought of how we got to this sport I play, or how I as a woman am able to play sports, or even how the game came to be. Some lessons I learned over this course are sports have come a long way, each sport has their own history, sports should rely on performance, to not take sports for granted, that race, gender and class are still the foundation of sports, and that we will always have obstacles to overcome in sports. In sports we will always be trying to strive and improve sports through race, gender and class along with trying to rely on performance to guide us in the…
