Reflective Essay: A Career In Special Education

Aside from any required fieldwork I have previously completed, I have been in numerous positions that have allowed me to work with children. I have been teaching swim lessons to elementary school children for the past three years, and I have also volunteered as a camp councilor at a church camp where I would supervise my camp group and teach a bible lesson once per day. In addition to these examples, this summer I was hired to be a para-educator for special education summer school at BOCES where I worked with eleven middle school students for six weeks.

Currently, my confidence is level high as I have been doing well in all of my classes, in track, and I am lucky enough to receive support and be surrounded by positive friends, buy when it comes to public speaking I still can become nervous. I like to be very prepared for presentations, but even if I am, I still become apprehensive when speaking in front of my peers. However, my public speaking has drastically improved each year, and I have found that being a little nervous for anything just shows that I am taking a presentation seriously and that I

As an athlete, I am constantly working alongside other people, and my interpersonal skills I have developed on the track carry over to school and my professional work.

In five years I hope to have graduated from college, obtained my masters, and be teaching in a public elementary school as a special education teacher with my own classroom. If I am able to, I would also like to be a track coach so I can share my passion with others who enjoy running. In ten years I hope to either still be teaching, or that I can work my way up to a higher position such as head of a special education department so I can ensure that all students with special needs in the school I work for will receive the quality education they

I didn’t know that I was Black until the fifth grade. I mean, I always knew that I was Black as in the Black slash African American box I poorly shaded in every year on the CST. But, I was never truly cognizant in the ways in which the melanin in my skin differentiated me from others. During a passing period between classes, I came to a realization of my race. Like hundreds of times before, I entered the dimly lit restroom connected to the cafeteria of my elementary school; but, instead of exiting the restroom, after washing my hands, I caught a glance of my reflection.…

In order to prepare for my informative speech, I practiced at home with my note cards and PowerPoint slides to make sure they flowed smoothly. I tend to perform quite well in front of people when talking, so being in front of an audience to give a speech did not seem to be a vast deal to me. Even though I do tend to catch some nerves, they never truly show through which is something that my parents say I am blessed with. Once I finished my speech, I felt like I did the best that I could. Although I did have some mess ups with the information that I wanted to get across to my peer audience, I believe that they understood most of what my information was and the points that I wanted to emphasize the most.…

    1. Being on the Epic staff is a truly indescribable experience. As a beginner during my sophomore year, I learned the essence of journalistic writing, design and working in a group environment. At the same time, I began to stand up for myself in front of my tough Editors-in-Chief and became a mouthpiece for the other newcomers in presenting problems on staff. I learned that just because someone holds the crown, they are not necessarily right, and change can be a good thing.…

I am not sure I have changed a ton in this first semester of college. I still really want to teach, and I still believe that special education is where I want to teach. A number of people might say that they are more independent or outgoing now. I had to become independent last year when I was living away from my parents for the school year, so that independence really hasn’t increased in these past few months. I would maybe say that I am more introverted now than before.…

Although I feel that I did an adequate job on the group project one of the most important skills that I desperately need to improve on is learning to present in front of an audience. We had two assignments this semester that revolved around speaking in front of our class, the first being a speech by ourselves and the second being the group presentation. I am a cheerleader, so being in front of crowds does not bother me but what makes me the most nervous is when I have to speak in front of others by reading something I have written or completed. In the group presentation I was not as nervous since I was not alone in speaking to the class, but on the speech I did I was overcome with anxiety. Being able to talk in front of others is my biggest setback, but I am certain that with enough practice, patience, and preparation I will be able to calmly give a speech over any subject that I am required to do.…

This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. Also, next time I will prepare some notes to prompt me and to ensure I do not forget to mention any important details the students may…

I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…
